At least in 3.1 point based generation guarantees the same best effort as rolling. I don't know exactly in which version it has been changed.

---------- I "feel a little lucky" on level 2. A sling I picked up turns out to be magical. Find my first two wands on level 3. Found a room full of giant white lice...and a novice paladin. I try fighting the paladin, but he casts terrify on me so much that I decide it's not worth it with all the lice there. Good thing there is a door I could close to block them off. Good thing the paladin didn't follow me and let the lice out. I gain level 8. I can learn 2 more prayers, but I need to be level 9 to get the last prayer in my prayer book. I'm starting to wonder why I'm getting all these extra prayer points I can't use. I'm running out of space in my backpack, so I try some unidentified potions. One was a potion of slowness. Another was a potion of poison. My last unidentified potion was a potion of blindness. Well, at least I survived. ![]() I later learn that a second sling I had is magical. So, I have two magical slings. I wonder if one of them could replace my short bow. I also wonder if it would be worth identifying them considering that they probably have junk enchantments. I find another pit of lice. There is another door here to block them off, but still. I notice that it's a "quiet, peaceful place" I'm in. Wondering what I've been doing here all this time, I climb the next set of down-stairs to level 4, which turns out to be "reasonably safe." I wanted room for a potion of speed I saw, so I read an unidentified scroll. I "sink through the floor" to level 6. At least I "have a very good feeling" now. I finally find a lantern. Since I have 6 flasks of oil already I drop all of my torches. When casting Detect Evil, I notice that Smeagol is in the dungeon. I have no source of detect invisible. Facing him is going to be painful. |

Clevel 7/dlvl 2 is definitely too slow. get some WoR so you don't have to climb back up the steps and try to hit at least dlvl 10 on your next shot (first steps you find). you'll probably hit clvl 10 without noticing. Don't be afraid to run if you see smeagol/wormtongue/mughash-- you'll be able to clean them up easily later.
-- disclaimer: I have still not won and am definitely not an awesome player. |

Sounds like you're paying way too much attention to level feelings. They really aren't worth paying much attention to.
If you don't feel like facing smeagul- don't. Just go on to the next level. ..and go deeper.

Well, I already have the scrolls of Word of Recall that I need... I'll take the advice of ignoring Smeagol. How easy will it be to meet him again though? ---------- I run into a gang of novice mages and priests. I waste my arrows on a brown mold, then whack it with my dagger to get character level 9. I waste my arrows again on a rot jelly. I don't feel like finishing off this creature with my dagger. After facing another gang of priests and mages, I decide to test my two unidentified wands on the rot jelly. They turn out to be a wand of wander and a wand of magic missile. This time I kill off the rot jelly and get back some of my arrows. I find my first rod. I test it on a spotted mushroom patch; it turns out to be a rod of slow monster. I also try out another unidentified wand I found after meeting the last gang of p's on the mushroom patch, revealing it to be a wand of Stinking Cloud. I find another brown mold that gains me a character level. I try to disarm a strange rune. It teleports me to a room with a single giant white louse. There's no door in sight. Stricken with terror, I run as fast as I can to the nearest staircase, striking down a bewildered kobold on my way. I'm on dungeon level 7 now. By Detecting Evil, I find out there is a baby gold dragon and a baby white dragon. I need to be cautious. However, it turns out that the real challenge of this dungeon is not the baby dragons, but Bullroarer the Hobbit. Code:

I explore some more after picking up my spoils. I see a war hammer on the floor that I think about picking up. I have no room in my backpack though, so I read a couple of unidentified scrolls. One is a scroll of Darkness. That is nothing special, but another scroll I try out is a scroll of teleport level, which brings me up to level 6. At this point I decide I might as well teleport to the town, though not before picking up another wand of stinking cloud that was in the room. I first sell my unidentified scrolls to the alchemy shop, which is a much better way to identify them. I buy some scrolls of Identify to figure out what stuff I have. First I identify the drops from Bullroarer. The robe is nothing special, just a +1 AC bonus. The cutlass, on the other hand, is a cutlass of Westerness! I'm going to miss the extra blows from my dagger, but I'm pretty sure it's worth it. As for the slings, one is good while the other is junk, which didn't surprise me much.* I am very disappointed that the temple doesn't have the next prayer book I need in stock. I can learn four new prayers but can't learn any more prayers from my current book. I buy food, more Word of Recalls, more Phase Doors, and a staff of Identify. I read one of my Word of Recalls back down to dungeon level 7. Code:

The sling is better. They have the same multiplier (x2), the only drawback of the sling is heavier ammo.
I don't remember if long bows are still carried in the town stores in 3.1.0, but if they are, you should get one as soon as you can afford it. One of the most important things for newbies to learn in Angband is that you don't have to kill everything and you shouldn't try. There's no reason to bother with brown molds or rot jellies. Just ignore them. Another important thing to learn: Along as you have recall, you should go down stairs. When you find stairs leading down and don't know of any worthwhile treasure to get on the current level, take the stairs. It'd be safer to carry a couple more than 2 recall scrolls in case a couple get burnt up by salamanders.

The Weapon of Westernesse is vital for you - see invisible and free action in particular are necessary to survive in deeper levels.
Visit the Black Market whenever you are in town - a ring of dexterity will rise the number of blows you get with it. Don't ever take this weapon off in the dungeon until you found boots of fa, a ring of fa or any other source. Quote:
And later on the elemental hounds will do the same and they turn up in large groups (you cannot detect them with "detect evil"). Your fight with Bullroarer was pretty close. He has killed some of my characters since he is quite fast and tough. Be cautious with the next uniques you encounter, they are all rather tough and come with large escorts of orcs. Novice mages summon now? and cast elemental spells? When did this happen? Or do the tougher mages come in groups now?

Gnome mages can summon monsters. They show up around 750 feet / level 15.
