Vault O' Purple Dragons

Just ran into this vault on D60, and the number of purple "D"s threw me off. Checked, and yup, every single unique dragon was here (Kavlax was here in the corridor just north of the northern-most purple "D", but I killed him before getting the SS).

Code:

The other friendly-friends that showed up here are Hoarmurath, Balrog of Moria, and Bolg. Both Ar Pharazon and Baphomet were here as well, but I TO'd them. Shelob was outside the vault elsewhere on the level, and followed me over.

Honestly, that's just a lot of "D"s crammed into a little spot! *ba-dum-tsh*

I think that Glaurung has the other unique dragons (except Ancalagon, maybe?) as escorts, so if they haven't been killed already, they're highly likely to spawn when Glaurung does.

Yep. If you get Glaurung, you get all the dragon uniques (similarly for Gothmog, you get the Balrog uniques.)

Because it's objectively better.

Just kidding, play with whatever you want, but I prefer ASCII because I can instantly tell what everything is at a glance.

It is objectively better. First and foremost because, yes, you can tell what everything is at a glance, but also because it takes less space for that. Playing with really large tilesets also (I presume) allows you to recognize things at a glance, but with ASCII, I do that with literally the entire dungeon on my screen. I haven't seen an "(offscreen)" in well over a decade.

Because some of us have been playing since the days of Moria in the early 1990's and are used to ASCII and the game looks wrong to us in tile sets.

Also the early tile sets were frankly not that great due to screen resolution limits of the time. Newer ones look better but well I have a lot of habit to break ;-)

It is incredibly hard to make nice-looking graphics that are small, nice-looking, and capable of cleanly representing the ~500 monsters in Vanilla Angband. All of our tilesets compromise those traits (small, pleasing, visually distinct) to a greater or lesser extent.

And besides, I've been playing roguelikes for close to 30 years now. I know what everything looks like, and brother, that Great Hell Wyrm doesn't look like a red D or like its tile in any tileset. It's a huge scaled thing, colors ranging from dusky red through to searing white-hot, I can't see it straight because of the shimmering in the air around it, but its talons are each as big as my sword, and when it opens its maw it's like staring into the solar furnace.

If you really care about graphical quality in your roguelike, I recommend Blizzard's Diablo series. Games like Angband and NetHack are designed for hardcore gamers, who only care about the gameplay, and don't need graphics. That's why ASCII remains the default interface and tiles the alternate display.
