I play on a laptop, where you sort of want to avoid excessive size. Also, if I wanted pretty graphics, I'd play tome4.

EDIT: Also, "buy a bigger monitor" is not a very nice sentiment in general.

I have a 24" display. When I play roguelikes, most of it is dedicated to the dungeon view. In ASCII.

And really? You can't understand using your imagination? Everything has to be laid out for you in pretty pictures? I don't know what generation you're from, but it's doomed.

Yep. That said, a fancy "angband" font with dragon 🐉 glyphs and the like doesn't seem like anbad idea, though you'd need two: one for lesser and another for greater. But still, it's glyphs: not icons. Glyphs let you pick a color which is critical here: sickly green for Nether; flickering red for plasma; dark blue for lightning, etc. It makes a big difference, and it's just one more reason I hate using tiles.

no, it's just the amount of info on the screen. And yes, ASCII is a bit too old skool for me. I like modern videogames. Like Quake3. mmboi. Those juicy 1998 graphics.
i owned a Intellivision. i paid my dues. now i want pwetty pictuwes.

I've generally stuck to ASCII graphics for all roguelikes....but switched to Shockbolts tiles lately and like them a lot. The biggest and only problem I notice is when using Banishment it is not obvious what character to use. I use an online resource in those instances to identify character.

It is the brilliant writing in Angband that captured my imagination and has me coming back again and again. It's the great writing that makes the ASCII view better than tilesets, nevermind the functional superiority that ASCII may provide over tilesets.

I too started with Moria back in the 80's so it just feels wrong to play with graphic tiles

In fact, it's Ancalagon that has all dragon uniques as escort. Glaurung is generated alone.

Ooooh... so it was dragon escorts to another dragon. I thought it way odd that they all showed up together, and so close to one another too.

I agree with most of the comments above about ASCII, especially the very clear, concise identification of a monster on sight. It also helps that things don't get hidden in colored clutter. In ASCII mode, only mobs and items have color, and the rest of the dungeon is black/white. It's stark and simple, and gives me quick info without sorting through visuals.
