Why is it, while both my character and the creature, are at 'normal' speed, that often the creature still is able, from time to time, to hit me, when I try to run away?

Are there 2 kinds of 'normal' speed, 1 of which is a little faster that the other?

I am now at 555.393 turns, at DL 12 and my human priest at level 19.
Still alive, having cleaned up all levels, some of which I had to redo after having to flee.

Ordinary monsters actually have between -3 and +3 (I think? the extremes seem rare in my experience) speed compared to what monster memory says. This rarely matters late game, but early on it can make running away tougher, yeah.
