Returning player

Hi guys
I am a long returning player whohas returned to the game after a long absence. I was mainly wanting to start again and am wondering what would be a fun race/class.
I have played a HE wizard ages ago when there was minor GoI and essence of speed.
I have also played a HE warrior until CL45 until I got bored with the game and RL decided I wouldn't finish it.
What should I start?

I try other classes from time to time but the one I seem to enjoy the most by far is HT Warrior. I like it because Angband is a bit protracted and HT Warrior starts out so powerful you can dive really quickly in the beginning and maybe get a good early drop. He blunders about a bit, but it doesn't really matter since he can just smash everything into small bits. Maybe I'm a bit of a simpleton, but I find it the most satisfying to crush everything in melee. Ranged combat can be fun, too, but the fragility of a ranger is a bit frustrating for me. I like the versatility of HT Warrior, too, as I do fine with a ranged weapon if I find something good. I tried a couple Dwarf Priests, but found the terrible hit rate very unsatisfying. HT Warriors are good later on, too, especially if you find a good Undead slaying weapon as I have found in my current game. I'm only on DL58 but I'm doing 600 dam per round to undead. Clearing Undead pits is fun and can be good for stat gain or other valuable potions. Which leads me to my next point: I find it more fun to be rewarded for battling a nasty than to tip toe around vaults to get goodies. Currently, 9 out of 12 of the items I'm wearing were dropped by monsters.

Fixed that for you.

Welcome back. If you're looking for a path-of-least-resistance to a winner, dwarf priest and high elf mage are considered two of the easiest, but rough in the early game. HE rogue is also very easy. For stronger starts that are still very winnable, half troll anything (my last several wins have been HT paladins, and I find it smooth as butter). I'm also a big fan of hobbit rogues, the ultimate stealth character; I think most will advocate for trading off a little bit of stealth for melee skill by taking a kobold or orc instead for a rogue.

Yes, I know, it was completely game breaking. But it was just to emphasize how long it's been.

How is the HE mage nowadays? I started a few but something as simple as a pit trap was enough to kill it without a bunch of potions. This was prior detect traps ofc.

I know, it's a minimal investment so I can always start a new one.

I'm mainly interested in the fun factor. I kind of like the HE Warrior because he can sneak and choose his fights. Maybe I should try a Hobbit Rogue.

I'm agonizing over a HE Wizard, a (HE/Dunadan/HT) Warrior, a (Dwarf/Dunadan) Priest and maybe a (Hobbit/HE) Rogue.

Hobbit rogues are great. Rogues in general are great, because they get thee detect objects spell, that really shows what that objects are.

High-elf has good stats, but the XP penalty makes level-up tedious sometimes.

I prefer Kobold rogue to Hobbit. But any of the stealthy races make good rogues.

For loud bruisers I actually prefer the dwarf warrior to half-troll warriors. HT warrior has no detect+the worst stealth in the game+the worst save+the worst device skill. For a while I was trying to play ironman HT warriors & constantly being chain-paralyzed by illusionists. That can still happen to a dwarf without FA but the save is around 20% higher (at least for level 1).

To some extent I think warriors should have their saves swapped with rogues who get the detects & stealth to deal with these issues though that's off-topic.

Warriors used to have substantially better melee than hybrids. If they get that back, balance is restored.

Would High Elf be good as well? I am guessing the only drawback is 200% XP needed to leveup.

High elf rogue is one of the smoothest paths to win. Yeah, the XP penalty is annoying, but not like it is for Mages. Rogues don't have so much problem killing monsters.
