Question Subwindow display settings.

I have a 24 inch iMac, so I display the dungeon in a window almost as big as the level - 11v x 14h inches. To the right at screen top I display a subwindow with the monster list which extends down to the bottom of the screen - 11v x 6h inches. Overlapping it about halfway down I have another subwindow for messages - 5v x 6h inches with 25 lines. Are there any other really useful subwindows which I could keep open? Lifesavers for example. I have a small 1x6 inch slice available to the right and left at the bottom of the screen which I could use...

I like to have messages and monster recall below my main display and an inventory list, monster list, item list to the right. I find the recall and monster list to be my most used.

I have monster list, item list, monster recall in a column on the right. Item list is incredibly useful for pointing out mushrooms that I'd miss otherwise most of the time. The value of monster recall depends on how familiar you are with the monsters, I suppose. I mostly use it to see what native depth something is (as a sort of reality-check on how hard I remember it as being) and to check if something gives unusually high or low xp relative to the risk and effort in killing it. Once I started playing with the monster recall window on I quickly learned not to bother with slime pits, for instance.

Thanks for the advice! I now have the main window at 11v x 13.5h on the left side at top, monster list on the right from top to bottom screen at 12v x 5h, item list overlapping that 3 inches down at 2v x 6h, monster recall below item list at 3.5v x 6h, and message list 9v x 5.5h at the back. With the different widths and heights, I can bring any list to the front when needed. It's much more informative! The remark about mushrooms makes me think that the reason why I found so few in my 2.9 million turn LCC1 game was the lack of an item list window!

i really like having all my windows arranged so i can see them all at once, i have a certain way which is perfect for me, it takes using tiny fonts, but this layout is so amazing: http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/8127/angband.jpg

I don't know why, but looking at that I feel like someone put the cockpit of an F-15 into a Model T ...

I have a dual monitor setup so the main window takes up almost all of one window whereas my subwindows take up 3/4ths the other one. I got rid of inventory and equipment because I just never looked at them. Monster recall, visible monsters and items, and messages are the main ones.

i use all my windows frequently, i constantly look at equipment and inventory to see what i have, monster list and recall to see what i'm up against, overhead view to see where i am and whats been explored, messages to keep track of anything i might have missed. if i had more room i'd probably put up a character info screen, though i don't know which i'd use, since i can only have one more term window

You know what would be nice is to be able to combine windows and/or have them sticky against each other to help maximize space.

You have a 24" iMac, LCC? No kidding! So do I! 3.06 GhZ Core 2 Duo and 4 GB DDR2 SDRAM

And here is the layout that I came up with after much trial-and-error; the only thing it lacks is an object list, but that I make do pretty well without it - just pressing the bracket button. You can squeeze it in next to the monster list if you want.

What I did to optimize space is I overlapped every window over the top bar of the window below it; the only true overlap is of the extra character info over part of the messages window (EDIT: Yes, the basic character info overlaps the extra character info, but most of the overlapped info is already in basic info), and regardless, you can still see the few latest messages (the only thing I ever use the window for) and you can infer the end of the messages before them.

As an added bonus, you get to see my recent death in the messages window.
