Lost savefile on upgrade : problem SOLVED

I apologize if this has been addressed before. I suspect
that I am out of luck, but REALLY wanted to check first.
I was running 3.1.2v1 on Slack Linux (compiled from src).
I just downloaded the newest source (3.1.2v2) and did
./configure, make, sudo make install. Now, when I start up,
my level 35 mage is noplace to be found! I feel REALLY dumb!
Does anybody know how I might recover what I have lost?
Does anybody know how I might avoid this in the future?
Thank you VERY much for any comments.
-Ross

update: problem fixed! I recompiled with
./configure --with-setgid=games --with-varpath=/usr/local/games/angband

Have a look in ~/.angband/Angband/save - that should contain all your savefiles. They will probably be called 1000.whatever. To start one of them, use angband -uwhatever.

If you had not installed your previous version, it is just possible there is a savefile in the angband/lib/save directory.

First off, look in your previous install source in .../lib/save

Nick could be right that the previous install used private dirs and the new install is using the install dir, but that would be a little strange if you compiled the same way.

Do you know the name of the savefile? It is based upon your userid and your login. Mine is 1000.Eddie for a login of eddie. I do not know why they capitalize a login, but they do. If you do not know your userid, look in /etc/passwd. ISTR slackware starting at 500 rather than 1000, but maybe that's just cause it was a long time ago.

I think slackware comes set up to use a command called "locate". I can find all of my savefiles in different installs with

locate 1000.Eddie

Perhaps that sort of search will find it for you.
