Delurks with depth and rChaos question

Just returned to Angband after a four year break. Good to see it under active maintenance again...

Ok, so I have my best character ever on the go. See Ekko and am debating whether to wear Isildur or Himring. I just read in an old spoiler that rChaos also gives rConf. Is this still the case? If so, I'll stick Himring back on quick for the rNether.

Oddly I think this character is surviving (so far) because I've focussed on maximising con, am wearing Hammerhand and feel (arguably) ridiculously out of depth. It's keeping me on my toes and i'm picking my fights carefully. Most of my other chars have died around stat gain as I got careless due to boredom....

I haven't looked at the dump, but I can answer the RChaos question: RChaos does not grant RConf, it will only prevent you from being confused by Chaos attacks. RChaos is pretty important, but I'd say RConf is more important at just about any depth. In fact I'd say RConf is probably more important than RChaos and RNether combined, so in all likelihood Isildur is your best bet. Good luck!

That's a footnote to the section which suggests you're asking to be instakilled if you pass 2700' without RChaos and RNether.
When did 2.8.5 come out anyway? I think I started playing on 3.0.5, three or four years ago.

Tail end of 1999, almost two years after the previous 2.8.3; it was marked as an incomplete beta version so few people played it. 2.9.0 came out some four months later and that was RR's first release.

3.0.5 came out towards the middle of 2004.
