Question scrolls of acquirement

i was lucky enough to find one with my mage on dlvl21 - how do these work?

is it better to wait for deeper dlvls to use them in order to have a better generated item, or it's not related to depth?

Oh yes, it's related to depth. It will generate an item, excellent or better (I think), native to xx levels below where it's read. I don't know what the xx number is. I once read one in town and 'acquired' armor of resistance. Be careful, scrolls do burn.

thanks; sadly my mage is already resting in peace.

I even found a potion of experience, kept both that and the scroll in the house for later - i guess i should have used them right away

playing mages verges on masochism though atm - they ought to be reworked a bit, i don't see the point of having a single class in the game substantially more difficult than the others (although i admit i never played a paladin even once)

I think there's something fishy going on with ?acquirement in 3.1.x - I've found 3 so far, and read all of them deeper than 3500' - all were egos of the less powerful variety. So I think you might as well read them earlier on.

Andi's plan has mages being reevaluated in 3.2 - which is pretty far out there but at least it's on the horizon. In the meantime you might want to check out NPP, whose mages are significantly powered up in spellcasting, and you still get that vanilla feeling.

Re: paladins - I haven't spent much time on them either, but they're traditionally considered to be one of the easier classes. A few days ago I found another reason to give them a closer look: if you roll a high-elf you get rotten wisdom, but you can start with 4 blows.

Paladins (Dunedain) are obsiously easy to play because my only two winners are paladins. ^^

i started playing a game with an NPP mage - first thing i noticed is the availability of detect treasure/object, although in two different spells (which kind of makes detect treasure pointless...) - which is a huge improvement; evidently this spell is not made available to the mage in V for a reason, anyone knows why?

I'll have to play a bit to get a better feeling, but if the general feeling is that NPP gets mages right couldn't it be possible for Andi and the other developers to take a look at the changes there and see what might be good to incorporate in V, wihtout having to recreate and balance on their own the whole class altogether? This could reduce a lot of hassle on their part

care to give me a few pointers on the main differences?

Detect treasure is not pointless in NPP, as you will find out soon enough...

There are a couple of low level spells, shockwave being chief among them, that give you really solid damage for little SP cost - not to mention it being a breath attack. Ice bolt and hurricane are also very good, and at higher levels rend soul and plasma bolt will give you great damage output. Since many monsters in NPP have elemental vulnerabilities you can also match your spells to the situation.

The net result is that you'll be using spells instead of a bow like in V for your main attack.

A dwarf paladin can start with 4 blows, wielding a dagger. and they dont have rotten wisdom.

Yeah, being new to NPP that pit shocked the heck out of me.
