feature request - sense non-std weight on pickup

If you pick up an item with a non-standard weight, you know immediately that it is an ego or artifact. Such items should be sensed on pickup.

So even if weapon dice are hidden in the future, when you pick up a 30 lb glaive it should be sensed as {special} on pickup.

This will become more relevant if some of the weight changes suggested in the other thread are implemented.

I've always thought it was silly that every weapon weighs exactly the same. I'd go further and give ego weapons variable weight: heavier big weapons (more criticals) and lighter light weapons (more blows). So that would mess up your auto-ID!

I asked for "sense on pickup", so you'd get those as {ego}. No problem there.

That sounds good, but it's only really relevant if there are some weight changes. (I like what Magnate suggested.)

Now that dice are hidden, I'd like to revisit this request.

If you pick up the trident of wrath, weighing 30lb instead of 7lb, that's obvious to anyone who checks their inventory even if it doesn't list the correct dice.

Perhaps a message on pickup "it is surprisingly heavy/light".

Items always list their actual weight, right? Weight is (and should be) obvious, and doesn't give away details on an item before you reach it, so this at least shouldn't be obscured. Artifacts/egos with non-standard weight are obvious if you reference other objects in your inventory, a spoiler file or probably even the object knowledge menu. A message wouldn't do anything but signal to the player that the item they picked up is non-standard in some way? Or would it actually twiddle one or more (possibly new) ident flags?

That was just he message I had in mind. The game effect should be to sense the item, i.e. to mark it as ego or special by calling whatever function it is that sets IDENT_SENSE.

i suppose there are other solutions, but this one is easy and seems good enough to me.

Of course, I think you should sense all artifacts on pickup [read their descriptions -- they are bloody obvious], so my opinion is these matters should be ignored unless others agree.
