Questions regarding vanilla inscriptions

I've recently downloaded vanilla Angband after a long time playing mostly MAngband and a few other variants, and I'm having some issues with certain inscriptions.

Notably, @f1=g on arrows, and @R#### on recall scrolls. I have a macro(or keymap, as vanilla insists on calling it for some reason) [Esc]f1*t, but when I use it, it prompts me for selection - pressing 1 at that point isn't an option. I have no idea whether the targeting works yet.

As far as the second inscription, it's really rather critical, and I have no idea why it isn't working. In MAngband, inscribing a depth (in feet) after @R on any source of recall will cause the character to be recalled to that depth, rather then the max depth. In vanilla, it doesn't seem to be working that way. Having just discovered that scrolls of deep descent exist by reading one, then trying to read another to cancel it, it's rather critical that I be able to recall to a safe depth, rather then my max depth.

Any advice?

Edit: Another, somewhat related question: is there a way to get objects from different sources to stack? I'm currently carrying two different stacks of iron shots because I bought one from 1 and the other from 3. I would like to merge them.

Instead of mapping f1*t, you can use 'h' (in the original keyset) or tab (roguelike). This will just fire the first quiver slot at the nearest monster.

There are no depth-based inscriptions in Vanilla. Recall and Deep Descent are always based on max depth.

If they have the same to-hit/to-dam and enchantments, they should stack. The stack limit is 40 per slot.

That is an interesting difference between how the quiver works and the traditional way people would manage ammunition. If you take a good look at the equipment menu you'll see that the quiver slots are both lettered and numbered. The old way you'd number your ammunition won't work anymore because the numbers are already being used to designate slots in your quiver. And to my annoyance I don't know of any way to shuffle ammunition around your quiver without unequipping.

Vanilla used to have macros in addition to keymaps. Literally the only functional difference between them is that macros could be invoked whenever the game was waiting for input from the player (including e.g. in the middle of a -more- prompt), while keymaps can only be invoked at the "base" level of interaction (when looking at player with no active prompts). The problem with macros is that they can go badly off the rails if they're invoked at the wrong time, which leads to silliness like prepending a bunch of [esc] characters to the beginning of every macro -- very unintuitive for new users! So macros got the axe, and now Vanilla just has keymaps.

If having to manually clear -more- prompts bothers you, there's an option to do it automatically. I recommend having a window open that shows the message history if you do this.

As for your shots not stacking, that's probably because if they did combine then there'd be more than 40 in the combined stack. Ideally IMO they'd make one stack of 40 and one stack of whatever's left over, but oh well.

Anyway, welcome back to Vanilla!

Huh, would you look at that - a quiver slot.

And stacks are capped at 40, that's new... it also explains why it wasn't working. I'm used to stacks of 99 =P

Looks like I can reset recall to a degree by stairing up and recalling from a higher floor, so that's more or less sorted too.

Thanks for the replies, everyone, very helpful

This behavior is in the nightlies, for reference.

Inscribing a stack of ammo with, for example, @f3 will move it to that slot.

There was an issue in 3.5dev with crashes occurring if you number your slots non-sequentially (i.e. stick in a {@f9} when you're only up to {@f2}), but that may have been fixed by now?

That makes entirely too much sense, thank you.
