in keeping with topic i guess, what more things would you want checked off on the character im currently running before going to say dlvl98 (other than obviously resist poison).
More speed? More damage? more escapes/TOs? Stats? or literally "just go now youre good"
Also as an aside, how do i enable the damage per hit in the (dmg) format that some people have at the top of their messages when they attack? thanks

Looking at your morgue, you have excellent damage (yes, even without Gorlim helmet) and speed for your depth DL 44. Also ESP is covered. So anything but big poison breathers and some out-of-depth vault encounters should pose a very little threat IF you don't rush into every fight. Aiglos is a FANTASTIC weapon to have at this point.

Constitution is a bit low, even though you have plenty of HP already. I would drink all Potions of Toughness I found. Possible minor losses to STR or DEX don't matter much at this point.
You may wanna be carrying potions of resist fire/cold for some breathers that start to appear soon. Double resistance lowers the elemental breath damage significantly. Some breathers you definitely wanna leave alone until later : ancient multihued dragon, drolem, dracolisk, dracolich.

Also this: carry wands or rods of slow monster. Nearly every monster in the game is affected by it (not tree monsters and anything that has 'Aether' in its name). Zapping a monster with it won't even wake it up but will slow it about -5 movement units.
Wand of Stun monster is also very effective cutting down monsters damage. Most monsters besides undead, are affected.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: Sorry about using the word 'morgue' there. Probably misleading. Morgue file is a term used in one other roguelike that I've played; meaning the same as character file dump in Angband Ladder

You can press '=a' to access the user interface options. Option c) in that menu is what you're looking for.

Aside from rPoison the most important are pConf and pBlind in my opinion. Aside from that your CON is quite low. For an endgame char you will definitely want more speed and cover at least some of the high resists. as you are playing a warrior and have very limited detection right now the lack of high resists especially nexus is tricky but neither of these resists is absolutely necessary to win.

You are carrying a lot of stuff you don't actually need and can free up slots to carry the stuff recommended by Sphara
-don't need to carry food around with you, just eat what you find and recall if you get close to hungry with no food in sight but that shouldn't happen in general
-63 ?phase door is unnecessary especially as warrior since you rarely need them to get out of melee range. you can stock up to 40 whenever possible, I'd drop the others
-you don't need the ?magic mapping with two rods imo
-your rod of recall can't be destroyed by lightning and your DEX is high enough to prevent stealing, so you can drop the ?word of recall

I've been in much the same boat since picking up 4.2.0 - struggling to get past CL30-35, seems that diving faster & fleeing more is the basic answer here. This thread was very helpful (thanks all!) in my last couple of games, finally starting to die lower in the dungeons!

indeed, thank you everyone for replies so far.
Think this is the furthest ive ever been through the game. taken on some uniques ive not seen before, and run from some others (encountered my first hand drujs)

I looked at one of your recent character dumps. The two main stats once you get deep are speed and CON. Wut1hout HP, something will kill you. Without speed, you can't put out enough damage, and the monsters do more. Now that you are getting to DL 40 with some consistency, put a few stat points into CON and a couple less into STR/DEX. It makes a huge, huge difference to reach 18/xxx CON early.

alright, im resurrecting the thread because this is the furthest ive ever gotten, and im pretty excited.

taken down my first ringwraiths, and getting some confidence vs some of the uniques at this level. im finding now that i simply dont have the damage to beat some of them before i use all my consumables too quickly, and i think my range combat is very poor.

What would you reckon i should do next? Im a little worried that im over confident, got put back in my place by the mouth of sauron (oh my god) and Makar (holy crap), but looking at my kit, theres almost no way i can contest either in my current state (from my first encounters, i got absolutely wrecked).

Is it now just a matter of leveling up, clearing some nasty uniques, and gathering consumables for the final fight at this point? do i just keep diving?

From this sort of point, what would a more experienced player be looking to do next.

Thanks again

Leveling up doesn't matter much. The only thing that matters is loot, and the best way to get it is to find vaults below DL 90, where there are ridiculous numbers of them. You should find a big 3 weapon with +2 attacks or Holy Avenger, at which point your damage will be plenty high. (Essentially every ego weapon in vaults at that depth will be either HA, +attacks, or Gondolin, so your odds are good.) You will also need plenty of consumables -- Healing potions, scrolls of mass banishment and *destruction*, etc.

Edit: I see your character.
Aiglos is a pretty good weapon. Your trouble is lack of off-weapon damage bonus. Better gloves, or an amulet of Weaponmastery, or a Ring of Damage--any of these would help. Also, buffing makes a big difference, especially if you find a heavier weapon. You are likely to see as much as 30 points extra damage fully buffed. It looks like you are fighting too much-- you should have a lot more rods of Teleport other at this point. Wands aren't much good against sauron and Morgoth unless you fight from a distance. You should have a stash of half a dozen scrolls of mass banishment. You should have more ordinary healing potions. Part of your problem is dl 76 just isn't quite deep enough for the best loot.

And your HP is a little on the low side. 18/170 CON is a bit below where you should be. You can afford to give up a bit of speed for more CON or Damage.

ok, going hunting for more consumables (scrolls and potions), and more TO.
going to see if i can get myself a shiny +con ring, then make a dive to the 90s (scary for me, never been here before). and get a better weapon when i get there

forgive my newbyness, but what is a big 3 weapon?

I'm fairly certain that by big 3, Pete means Maces of Disruption, Scythes of Slicing and Blades of Chaos
