Post your window arrangements.

Ok here is a thread where we can compare how we use the Term windows. The Forum does not allow large enough png files so I zipped it.
For those who don't know, the gimp has an easy window snapshot function.

It might be some help to newcomers who haven't seen a game as customizable as angband before.

It should also help in designing some interface changes.

Personally I use a quite wild setup. Some of the windows even overlap. But I rarely need to see the letter list for the equipment window. The small thing bellow the equipment window is the seen item list. When there is no vault on the level it is large enough.
Oh and I use the sdl version (on e16), obviously.

In true ASCII style

----------------------------------------------------
| | | |
| main | item | monster |
| window | list | list |
| | | |
----------------------------------------------------
| monster | previous |
| recall | messages |
----------------------------------------------------

Sometimes I need to extend the item list and monster list further down if a vault appears. That's also when I usually go around squelching items. (A scroll bar would be nice)

I rely on previous messages a lot since I have the game skip through -more- prompts.

I have a good enough memory to keep my inventory and my equipment in my head.

Since I mostly play GCU mode I use a simple 2x2 box layout. On my netbook (in a 106x32 terminal) the arrangement I use is:

Code:
+---------------+------------+
| | |
|main (80x24)|foes (25x24)|
| | |
+---------------+------------+
| | |
|messages (80x7)|items (25x7)|
| | |
+---------------+------------+
Obviously I'll still need to sometimes run the list items command or list monsters command in particularly crowded settings. But this setup mostly works OK--I can see the last 7 messages and I can be reminded about the most immediate foes and any unseen item kinds.

As such, I am definitely in the camp of people who favor a compact (and left-aligned) default display of items and monsters.

I prefer a particularly complicated layout:
Code:
+-------------+
| main |
| 100x40 |
| |
+-------------+

I used to do main in the lower right corner, with map above that, inventory/equip on the left, and monster recall in the upper-right corner. But then I discovered that some Angband variants allow you to make the main window as big as you want, so you aren't limited to such a tiny field of view any more. So now my main view takes up an entire 1680x1050 display with a size-18 font, and I have monster recall and inventory/equip on a side display (no need for an overhead map with a view this big!).

---------------------------------------
| | |
| monster | main |
| list | window (84x29) |
| (80x46) | |
---------------------------------------
| previous | item |
| messages (77x19) | list (68x17) |
---------------------------------------

I don't have a good enough memory to keep my inventory and equipment in my head, but I've played Nethack (and Zork) enough before Angband to be in the habit of using the (i)nventory command often.
I really only have the item list turned on for testing purposes (to make sure it updates properly). I don't really use it.

Here's mine - I use this same setup for 1024x768, 1152x864 and 1280x1024 - I just use slightly bigger fonts when I have more space.

I'm about to buy a 1920x1200 monitor, so it might be time for a complete rethink.

lol I do this too. I've never had a need for extra windows.
