Puzzled how to save game

I'm puzzled how to save a game for playing at a later date. Reading the forums and accounts of successful triumphs at level 100 it's obviously impossible to get from level 1 to 100 in one session.

So how's it done?

Last night after two hours play I got to level 10 and it was time for bed. The lowest I've ever got and I lost the character because I can't save it.
Or can I?

Am I missing something?

Exiting the game will save it; in any case it saves every time you enter a new level. ctl-S will force a save.

ctrl-s = forced save. ctrl-x = save and exit. any new level = automatic save.

Didn't Krazyhades do that once and record it?

Yeah, I had an Angband 3rd place win in a comp that I recorded (well, I'm missing a bit at the beginning) and played in a single ~26 hour sitting.

edit: It's also worth noting I am far *far* from the fastest or most efficient player that oook has
