Experience draining, bleah
I'm playing a rare-for-me warrior, and I've gotten far enough to have fire immunity and just about every resist... except hold life. And at DL75, CL48 (currently 47) I'm finding that creatures that drain experience are the bane of my existence. So annoying!
So, when you are below full experience and kill something, most of that experience goes toward refilling what was drained, but some small portion still advances your max experience -- what percentage is that? I'm guessing 5-10% maybe, but just curious. :-) Thanks! |

none, AFAIK.
ok, after testing, a really tiny amount. anyway, HL is essential below DL65. "essential" as in, unless you want to live in paranoia. getting drained 50000xp by a mob that's not even worth 1000xp is reeeeally annoying .

Last time I participated in a discussion on this topic I pointed out how "not fun" this is. I think our best alternative was max HP drain instead of max XP drain, and it would heal the monster, too.

Drain life is way less painful than drain stats, especially str and dex. And usually undead are glass cannons easily dispatched by archery.

my big problem with warriors is how unimportant experience is to them. pretty much every other class, coming out of a won fight a level down would really hurt my feelings, but pretty much every other class has much better remedies available.

Hold life helps with direct experience draining attacks. IIRC, hold life doesn't protect against experience loss from nether or time attacks. If experience drain is really a problem for you, stockpile potions of restore life levels. It's the only effective remedy other than killing so much stuff that the experience drain is moot.

I believe Hold life gives you a saving throw and also reduces the experience drain by 90% in cases where the saving throw fails. So if an attack would normally drop you by 1000 experience points, with hold life, you will only lose 100.

I haven't been hit hard enough to check, but do you lose levels? Or just XP?
I agree with others that XP loss is less important than stat loss, and Restore Life Levels is a reasonably common potion. But it's no fun to waste all of the time in a vault being down on XP. All Restore Life does is reinforce how much of a waste of time it was (barring shiny objects, of course). |
