YASD - the most frustrating death in the world
I was a clvl ~10 priest, down about 500' when something burnt up my one and only priest book.
No worries though, I just need to WoR back and get another one but - damn - I still haven't found any ?WoR. No problem, I'll walk back to the surface. It shouldn't take too long. I start slowly making my way up. I get hungry around 400' and realise that I only have one food ration left. I eat it and continue on upwards. The stairs are just taking forever to find. I start panicking a bit as I'm nearly hungry and still six more levels to go. Amazing luck, I find a copy of Godly Insights at 300' (which I've never ever seen before), but that doesn't help with the food problem. Carrying on, I get hungry again at 250'. I start stair scumming a bit (which I'd never normally do, but I'm in a tough situation here). Can't find any stairs, can't find any food. I eat a couple un-id'ed mushrooms I was saving, but they don't do much to stave of starvation. I die of starvation at 50'. ![]() Note to self: Next time, remember to pack extra food. ~~~~~ 23. 1603 Olas III the Dunadan Priest, Level 11 Killed by starvation on dungeon level 1 (max 10) (User 0, Date 2007-10-24, Gold 1365, Turn 65030). ~~~~~ The RNG strikes again! |

One of my heroes once died of starvation just a few steps from the general store. ^^

That used to be my most frequent cause of death. lol I'd dive really deep and something would burn up my ?WoR.

I don't think I've ever died from starvation
![]() Always carry at least 5 rations and pick up the food you find, it can be dropped again if you find something more valuable (In the lower levels, that is) |

I only ever carry normal rations of food and/or mushrooms of restoring, but I eat slime molds, elvish waybread and any non-damaging mushrooms straight off the floor. There are times when my character eats so much it's more like Pac-Man than Angband.
Also, my Dunadan Warrior winner was gorged for almost his entire battle with Morgoth thanks to overdosing on potions. |

You should carry waybreads and leave the rations for the rats.

True that. I normally just dive at about clvl = dlvl, reading every scroll I find. The length of my first dive is normally determined by when I eventually stumble across a ?WoR.

Now I make sure I have food available when I drink unIDd potions (at least until I've IDd Salt Water). CC |
