My Hengband Touhou Katteban play diary
Now that I've made a somewhat playable translation for that Hengband Touhou mod, I decided to write down details of my playthrough here and hopefully get some attention.
I'm playing as Yuuka Kazami. She's one of easist characters to play as; she's a dual class that's good both at close combat and magic, her race is Great Youkai (good stats, gets a lot of innate resistances by leveling up, vulnerable to holy), and she starts out with Flower that Never Withers, which is reflavored Glaive of Pain. One of this mod's features is how some classes/races are intentionally unbalanced; the more innately powerful your character is, the less your score will be. Yuuka has a fairly low modifier of 21%. She can study either Elements, Nature or Chaos realms; Nature and Chaos are mostly the same as their Hengband variants, Elements is a new realm mainly focused on the base elements (though more advanced spells have more exotic elements). I'm going with Nature; as a Great Youkai, my aptitude for this realm is worse than usual, making it more difficult to use. I'll still benefit from the utility spells here; Yuuka doesn't have many special abilities on her own. With my starting weapon, early game enemies get defeated very quickly. Farmer Maggot goes down in two hits and drops a Small Metal Shield of White Wolf Tengu ([5, +10], resist cold/sound); I sell it since I'm getting more blows per round if I'm holding my weapon with both hands. I purchase some random assortment of armor from Armoury instead. Time for Thieves Hideout. Unlike original Hengband, you don't immediately have access to your house in towns in this mod; upon clearing certain quests, you can change make building in town your 'Exploration Base' (reflavored 'Home'). Those quests are impossible to fail - if you leave them halfway through, the entrance still stays on the town map. Thieves Hideout is one of those quests; I clear it without problems and make it my exploration base. No notable drops. I'm at level 3; Great Youkai take a lot of experience to level up. Next up is 'Have You Seen Our Tupai?' quest, one of the new ones. You have to fight a Chupacabra one-on-one; it's +25 speed, 225 HP, 60 AC, 1d10/1d10/2d5 in melee, and can blink around. For most classes, it's unrealistic to clear it right after Thieves; with my weapon, I should be able to defeat it quickly enough. I bought some Scrolls of Holy Chant for that temporary AC boost and a Scroll of Light, since I don't have access to Daylight spell yet. I go in, illuminate area, buff myself and start fighting. After a quick fight, I'm victorious and reach level 10; I allocate a stat point in Intelligence. (As a minor aside: Both INT and WIS are important for any spellcasters in this mod. INT affects amount of spells you learn and failure rate; WIS affects your MP and protection from magic). I learn Detect Traps/Doors, Produce Food, and Daylight; casting those spells gives me enough XP to go up one more level, letting me learn Resist Environment. The reward for this quest is a ribbon ego-item (Ribbons are a new item slot in this mod, replacing shooting weapon; now you have to hold ranged weapons in hands to use them). ID'ing it reveals it's a Ribbon of Protection [1, +9] with some unknown resistances. Next up, Angband. I purchase a Staff a Perception and set off. Another one of Great Youkai bonuses is having see invisible + free action at start, greatly reducing nasty surprises in early game. I defeat Smeagol on surface, but he drops nothing. In Angband, I reach dungeon level 6; it's protected by Seiran (a Touhou character). +5 speed, 220 HP, 30 AC, 4d8 ranged attack, fires danmaku, blinks. While exploring the level, I run into Robin Hood and defeat him; he drops Kimono of Oni (rBase, +STR, other resist). Seiran goes down quickly as well; quest reward is Leather Scale Mail of Tengu (rBase, +stealth, other resist). I'll get innate rBase as I level up, but extra AC is still appreciated. She also drops a Lunatic Gun of Kappa, which is sale fodder. I reach level 10 and defeat some minor early game uniques, but I'm getting low on Perception charges, so I recall out. One of items is Witch Cap of the Teacher (+int, free action); I don't have anything better at the moment, so I'm equipping it. Then I visit Kourindou (location that is somewhat distant from Human Village); it offers *ID* service for $300. Ribbon of Protection and Kimono of Oni have chaos resistance, Tengu armor has shards resistance. I will get innate Chaos resistance at level 30, but it's pretty far away, and chaos resistance can be useful in early game. I also purchase 2nd volume of Nature realm and learn Stone to Mud. Lunatic Gun sells for $10000+. Then I deal with Orc Camp quest. Unlike Hengband, it's available in the starting town. I have no trouble with the enemies here; one of them drops a Set of Dragon Gloves. I can't wear them without raising my spell failure rate, but I'm not a pure spellcaster anyway. Reward is Cloak of Concealment (reflavored Elven Cloak) with +8 AC and +1 stealth. I visit Kourindou to *ID* dragon gloves; resistances are acid, water, chaos. As a minor aside: In Hengband, you could teleport between towns in inns; here, you can do the same in a special building called Divine Spirit Mausoleum Branch Office, which also offers recharging services. It also can teleport you to some other locations like Kourindou; you can teleport somewhere you haven't been to yet, but that requires an extra fee. |

I go back to Angband and reach dungeon level 12. Quest monster is Shagrat. Level is one those annoying arena levels with many trees around.
I eventually locate Shagrat and defeat him; drops are Battle Axe of Foxfire (reflavored Burning), and Cammithrim (I'm keeping my dragon gloves). Someone also drops a Cloak of Floating Spirits (heavily cursed, -to acc/dam, -str/int, levitation). My inventory is getting full, so I recall to surface; Cammithrim gets sold, and I purchase Potions of Healing and Restore Mana from Kourindou. Next up, Doom Quest 1. It's located at the Scarlet Devil Mansion now; this surface area is surprisingly dangerous in early game. It's a large open area, and Greater fairies can spawn here, who can summon multiple fairies around you; since all fairies can fire danmaku, this can lead to an ugly situation. The quest itself isn't a problem with a double fire resistance being readily available; I find Ring of Protection +16, third Necromancy spellbook, and the Dagger 'Grimtooth'. Reward is Ring of Flames +8. I sell Grimtooth and store the spellbook for later use (there's going to be one). I return to Angband and reach dungeon level 23 and level up to 21. I find Mystia Lorelei on one of the levels and defeat her; she drops some Roast Eel. One of Human Village quests requires you to deliver one of those, and the reward is a Potion of Life. I clear the quest. I also got a Potion of Charisma at some point; many unique classes have special abilities that depend on Charisma - I'm one of them, but I have only one ability. Better store prices are still good, though In this mod, Gachapin now breathes nuclear heat instead of radioactive waste; it's a fire+light composite element. I have resist light/disenchantment from my weapon, and I have chaos resistance covered as well; I'm probably ready for RQ 24, but I'd like to do some other quests first. Kourindou has the Mimic's Treasure, Phase Spiders and Death Swords, and Cloning Pits quests. I go for Mimic's Tresuare. I take a Potion of Speed and Wand of Stone to Mud; I have Stone to Mud as a spell, but it's at 22% fail rate with my Dragon Gloves. My resistance spell failure rate is acceptable. Quest goes without problems, I find a Rod of Enlightenment, an ego gun, and a randart Fishing Pole with +2 attacks/WIS/CON. Both of those sell for a lot of money. I move on to Death Swords quest; again, goes without a problem, I find a Potion of Constitution and a Fur Cloak of Patrolling with high AC bonus (and +searching). Searching is more useful in this mod, since it lets you find more rare materials/dungeon-specific items. I swap it for my Cloak of Concealment. Quest reward is Ring of Acid +9; since I don't have source of temporary acid resist yet, I swap it for Ring of Flames. Also, I got my first and only special ability at level 20; Gensoukyou's Flowering, 25 MP, CHR dependent, causes flower/trees to grow around you. More or less a less reliable Forest Creation than can potentially obscure a large area. Useful, but I'll get similar spells from my realm. Next up, Sewers. It's another quest that got moved to Human Village; I go through it with no problems and get a Magic Lantern. RQ 24 is Luigi. Level has a jelly pit on it as well; I locate Luigi, defeat him and move on. Notable reward is Metal Brigandine Armor of the Rohirrim; I equip it. I also reach level 23 and learn Nature's Awareness, giving me another source of mapping; it's at 61% with my gloves, though. Level 25 gets a bit hectic; a Chest Mimic summons Hagen, I take him out, no spear drop. Then Alberich comes out and summons phase spiders in an open area, I have to teleport. I find a Potion of Consitution and Scroll of Massacre Nearby (Mass Genocide; that's me changing the terminology - Japanese translation never used such heavily loaded term, but it still had implication of mass slaughter. This mod keeps the same term from JP translation). I deal with some early-mid game uniques, defeat Alberich; no notable drops. I also run into my first Dark elven warlock pack and reach character level 25. |

Time for a slight detour. I visit Moriya Shrine by riding the cableway from Human Village to use the Dream Diary.
It's this mod's version of Hengband's arena, but it's very different. You have 8 difficulty levels you can unlock by gathering enough points by successfully clearing the fights. Each fight puts you in a semi-randomly generated 'arena' against a couple of Touhou characters. You don't receive experience or normal item drops, but you receive a random reward item once you clear a fight. If you get defeated, you respawn at the shrine being fully recovered; unlike Hengband, you can keep fighting no matter how many times you lose. Also, you can use your inventory items in this fight, but some spells like *Destruction* or charming won't work. I'm aiming for Tuesday difficulty level and clean up some early fights to unlock it. Tuesday rewards contain a good amount of gemstone materials I'll need later on. Some enemies to watch out for are Marisa Kirisame (special unique that scales to her current level; she has nasty spells at this point), Yuugi Hoshiguma (uses fire storm and has 1d255 powerful melee attack), Hong Meiling (uses Ki sphere - reflavored Force element - that hurts a lot). After several fights, I have enough materials to fill up my inventory. I also get Gelsemium Tea (potion, poison breath for 800 if you drink it) and 2 Miracle Fruits (food, recovers 1/3 of max MP). With those materials gathered, I'm going to Kirisame Magic Shop, which is close to Kourindou. You can give Marisa items in exchange for her points, and you can exchange those points to get containers with specific items. She accepts materials and high-level spellbooks; that's why I kept that 3rd level Necromancy one. Exchanging my items gives me 700 points, which is more than enough to trade for 'Box with rattling sounds' - it contains a Staff of Speed. All those trades are one-time only, though. Kirisame Magic Shop area also has the Haunted Mansion in the Forest quest, which is a variation of Vapors quest. There's no more weird fumes with nexus breath (and nexus is an endgame element now anyway), but you have to watch out for Vengeful Spirits (curses, drains experience), Send-off lanterns (fire bolts) and Kappa engineers (water bolts). I find another Potion of Constituion here and clear the quest without trouble. Reward is still Rod of Detection. In Human Village, Pawn Shop is selling Staff of Speed at 90% discount and Ring of Slaying +10/+10; I purchase both and swap Acid ring for Slaying. For next quest, I'm visiting the Tengu Village. It's located in a kind of awkward place surrounded by mountains, but I have innate levitation, so that's not a problem. The town itself also is hard to navigate without levitation. Logrus Master quest is found here. It's not just Logrus Master now - there's an Enchantress and a Demonologist as well. It got somewhat tense when Enchantress summoned dragons dealing significant damage, but I teleported, hasted myself, and cleaned it up. Found Phial of Galadriel and sales fodder; with Phial being generated, Dark Elven Lords quest will now give Scroll of Acquirement. Logrus Master is the quest for Tengu Village that opens up your exploration base in this location. Dark Elven Lords is located at False Heaven Shelf, which is a location surrounded by mountains. Nothing unusual happens in the quest, I get my scroll of Acquirement. Next up is a new quest - Shrine Maiden Alert!. You get a team of friendly yamawaro + an unique, and you have to defeat a level 36 Reimu Hakurei. Just like Marisa, she's a special unique that scales to current dungeon level - and this quest is level 36. (Also, Reimu and Marisa never count as truly being 'defeated', so both of them can keep reappearing no matter how many times you defeat them. They're very dangerous on lowest levels.) I end up having to drink a Potion of Healing, but I manage to clear it. Reimu drops a randart Green Dragon Scale Mail with +3 WIS/CHR/speed/stealth, resist light/holy/nether and ESP for lawful/deities/youkai. I swap Rohirrim for it. The actual quest reward is a random Ability Card - an inventory item you can 'u'se to produce some effect - I got Mini-Hakkero, which fires a beam of light. It hits for 55, so it's not bad, but not great either. Few specific classes can utilize those cards to full extent, but the rest can only get 2 random cards per game as quest rewards. The card doesn't get used up, but it takes some time to recharge. Went back to Angband; found Colannon (sold); on level 32, found a vault without too many dangerous monsters; cleared it found, got Steel Helm of Hammerhand, replaced my headgear. Also found a Rod of Perception. Reached level 29. Took the Cemetery Guards Wanted! quest - another new one. You fight a lot of ghosts in a semi-open area; notable enemies include 3 Demonologists and Rin Kaenbyou (+12 speed, 3300 HP, 120 AC, 9d9/8d8/6d6 melee, critical/mortal wounds, fireball/firestorm, nether balls/bolts, summons undead). You want to deal with Demonologists as quick as possible; after that, your main concern is Rin - you want double fire resistance and nether resistance. I had some Crypt Creeps summoned on me early on, so I teleported; luckily, I landed close to Demonologists and cleaned them up. Then I dealt with other undead around here and moved on to Rin Kaenbyou - I have resist fire spell and resist nether on my armor, so she wasn't too much trouble. Quest reward is Ring of Reinforce Muscle +3. The pval here is random - it can be from 3 to 5. Cleared up the other ability card quest, it's at False Heaven Shelf as well. You have to run through a long area while logs (represented by monsters) are falling on you. Logs always move downwards; if they run into you, they attack; if they reach the bottom of screen, they teleport to the top. AC still applies - they're less likely to land a hit on you if you have high AC. The log barrage gets very dense by the end - you want some source of speed to safely navigate that. I received the ability card 'Dragon Pipe'; it gives heroism, speed and berserk for 15+1d15 turns. Looks useful, but being berserk limits action you can perform, so it's not that safe to use. |

Exploring further in Angband. Found Thalkettoth, reached level 30. I also find an Insect Sake (Revised); there's a quest at Hakurei Shrine that requires you to bring a strong enough alcoholic drink, and this one qualifies. I clear the quest; the reward is Staff of Holiness and cheaper curse removal/stat drain healing services. I also have gathered enough materials to get another item from Marisa - I pick Long box labeled 'DANGER - EXPLOSIVE', it contains a Staff of *Destruction*.
On level 37, I run into Ishikawa Goemon, defeat him, get Zantetsuken. It doesn't have its unique limitations from Hengband - being unable to attack female enemies would a severe disadvantage in this mod. RQ 38 is Mokele-Mbembe. +10 speed, 4800 HP, 90 AC, 10d10/11d11/11d11/12d12. I have hard time fighting it in melee; being hasted is a must, and I still have to teleport away once my HP gets too low. Mother Hydra is also on the level, and I have to keep double fire resistance up to avoid item destruction and stay hasted to avoid getting overwhelmed. I still manage to clear it up, one of rewards is Chain Mail of Arvedui. I decide to visit the last town, Streets of Former Hell. It's very far away from Human Village, and it involves navigating dangerous terrain; levitation is a must. I arrive there and take on the quest 'Unfriendly Neighborhood Monster'; it involves defeating Shelob. She's a strong opponent, but I'm already comfortable around dungeon level 40, so I take her down. One of random items on quest level is Stone of Lore, quest reward is a Poison Needle. Dragon Lair is also close to this town, and I decide to test my Scroll of Acquirement; it generates a low quality ego item, though. Angband level 38, defeated my first Ancient Dragon (blue). Also defeated Jurt and Lord Borel, and got a Potion of Constitution. Level 39, found Celegorm. Also found Dagger of Caine and Torque of Kitsune (+7 AC, +3 INT/WIS, makes spells easier to cast). I didn't have an amulet equipped, so it goes on. Also found an Amulet of Anti-magic. At some point, I leveled to 31, and learned Herbal Healing; it's at fail rate 61% right now though. There's something any class can do with ability cards they get: Exchange them at Moriya Shrine. Each card has its own 'rank', which more or less shows how powerful it is; at night, you can exchange a card for another card of the same or lower rank up to 3 times. Dragon Pipe is rank 2; I want another rank 2 card - Ancient Magatama; it has a passive effect that increases your AC by 20 if you carry it in your inventory. I get lucky, and Ancient Magatama shows up on my first exchange attempt. Dungeon level 43, I run into Queen Ant. Double resistance to fire for fire ants + haste to avoid getting overwhelmed; done. She drops 3rd books of Darkness and Nature; I learn Stone Skin, Resistance True and Forest Creation. Again, failure rates are high now, but Stone Skin is useable. Accepted Welcome to Gensoukyou quest at Hakurei Shrine; it's to defeat Sumireko Usami. She's a Touhou unique who won't appear unless you have this quest accepted; after that, she can be generated as usual. If you find and defeat her, the quest is complete. Gachapin in Angband drops Golden Crown of the Princess (ego-item; rBase +some high resists, high AC, high CHR bonus) and Heavy Crossbow of Guanzi. Since I already have innate rChaos, I swap my ribbon for another ego-ribbon from Kourindou that gives +2 DEX/stealth. Seiga Kaku (Touhou character) drops Hitodama Lantern fixed artifact (rNeth, cold aura, activates to summon ghosts) and 3rd Elements book. RQ 44 is Garm. He summons a Dracolich early on, I teleport it away. He beats me down pretty hard, forcing me to use a Potion of Healing. Rewards include No-Dachi 'Taro-Dachi', Tokin of Satori (headgear of Telepathy; this one doesn't have full telepathy, but it has a lot of sensing) and Amulet of Resistance. I'm still lacking confusion resistance, so I visit Eientei to clear Old Man Willow Quest; it still has Ring of rConf as reward. Then I visit Kirisame Magic Shop to pick the quest 'Monster from the Looking Glass' - 1v1 battle with Jabberwock. I have rChaos and rConf, and I can buff myself to fight in melee; I get hit hard, but I clear the quest without spending resources. Reward is Amulet of Telepathy. Back in Angband, Quachil Uttaus spams time breath on me, forcing me to retreat and recover. At level 45, I run into Sumireko. She's tough - +10 speed, 2800 HP, 120 AC, 2d6/8d8/15d15 melee including earthquake attack, 15d15 shooting attack, tornadoes, whirlpools, spatial distortions, and a special attack that deals 100+1d50 damage and teleports you away. I also run into a Dark elven sorcerer, who slows me down for a while. Sumireko takes up a fair amount of resources, including several Potions of Healing. I still end up defeating her; she drops 3D-Printer Gun and a Smartphone. Rinnosuke at Kourindou buys Smartphone for $100000. Quest reward is a Potion of Experience. I go back to Dream Diary to fight some battles on Wednesday level. The rewards are somewhat more rare materials plus useful items like Potions of Healing; getting a particular item, however, requires luck, and fights are getting tougher. I collect some materials; one of them is Mithril, and one of early quests requires you to bring Mithril ore. I clear it; the reward is Rod of Recall. I already found one earlier one, so I switch from carrying scrolls to carrying 2 rods. |

Back in Angband, I run into Youmu Konpaku; she's fast, hits hard and drains mana in melee; I have to teleport away to heal and come back. She drops her weapon, Roukanken after being defeated. Utgard-Loke is on the level as well; I set up double resistance + haste + stone skin and melee him; some summoning ensues, I teleport problematic monsters away. Utgard-Loke goes down.
I reach level 34 and learn Eagle Familiar spell from 3rd book; it transports one of your items to your exploration base, but there's an upper limit on item weight. Useful if your inventory space is running out. I collect quite a few 3rd level spellbooks on this level. Reached dungeon level 49 and leveled up to 35; nothing much more of note happened. Level 50 is guarded by the midgame boss Yukari Yakumo; I think doing Cloning Pits first might be a better idea, but that still requires preparation. Probably going to try getting some resources from Dream Diary again. I grind for some time in Dream Diary and get some Potions of Healing an spare Staves of Speed; in Angband exploration, I find Amulet of the Magi of the Moon (ego-item, +9 AC, +4 INT/WIS/searching/infra, easier to cast spells, resist poison/holy/time/confusion/blind, see invisible, free action, sense animals). I'm replacing my Torque of Kitsune with it. I also found Ring of Andvari (artifact, +4 CON/CHR/searching/magic device use, activates for alchemy, rDark/Disen, telepathy, light source, heavily cursed and adds more curses). Looks useful, but that curse part is risky. With Ring of rConf no longer required, I swap it for Ring of Reinforce Muscle +3; I'm now at 6 blows/round with average damage of 550. I take on Dragon Extermination quest from Hakurei Shrine. It's a one-on-one battle against Great Wyrm of Chaos; I have the proper resistances, but still end up having to use a Potion of Healing. Reward is a Ring of Speed; now here's some more details about game mechanics: Many quests rewards are a special container with the reward item in it, and the actual reward gets generated at the point you open it. Another game mechanic is 'lucky' status, which makes the game generate items slightly more in your favor. The bonus on a Ring of Speed is linked to that status - if you have it, higher bonus values are more likely. One way of getting it is performing divination at Hakurei Shrine; you can do it once per day, and one of possible results is getting that status for the rest of the day. I keep resting at the inn until I get that, then I open the reward container and get a Ring of Speed +7. I swap my Ring of Slaying for it; my average damage drop to 489/round, but now I'm at constant +10 speed. More dungeon exploration, found a slightly better Ring of Speed (+8). Leveled up to 37, learned Blizzard (hits everything in sight with cold). Not that powerful and my failure rate is too high, but theoretically useful for cleaning up weaker monsters. Time for Cloning Pits. A minor aside: In Japanese Hengband community, this quest is considered to be one of the best and memorable ones, and essentialy the representative quest of the variant as a whole. It is challenging, it requires preparation, it has element of luck (random monster spawns), it's positioned at the point where midgame starts to transfer into endgame, and it has a guaranteed great artifact as a reward that can be used by pretty much anyone. It is virtually unchanged for this mod. The reward is still the same; except if you can't use footwear, you get Shiva's Jacket instead. If you can't use footwear and are a maid/butler (has to wear a suit/maid uniform), you get level 60 randart gloves with guaranteed +4 to speed and FA. If you're playing as Kisume (can't use footwear, can only use buckets as body armor), you get a similar randart bucket. You're still very likely to get a useful reward. This is a quest I was concerned about, but, fortunately, it goes very well. My stealth is Superb (value 12), and most of the enemies don't wake up. I start with Queen Ants and nearby randoms, and then move to the left. Nobody manages to get a summoning spell off - I clean up Queens, Gachapins, Dagons, Its, Bokrugs without issues. There's no nasty random monsters either. The rest is easy. The uniques in the quest drop multiple fixed artifacts I'm not planning to use; they sell for quite a lot, though. I get Shiva boots as reward; I'm now at constant +15 speed and 520+ dam/round. |

More pre-Yukari Angband exploration; I find Gauntlets of Oni (ego-item, slaying + STR bonus); I swap my Dragon Gloves for them, now I have 7 blows/round (I think I'm getting extra blow for holding my weapon with two hands) and deal 694 dam/round.
Next up, Doom Quest 2. It's located at Myouren Temple, but is basically the same as original. I clear it with no problems; reward is Staff of Healing. Old Castle quest is next. It's located at Tengu Village now; again, it's still the same as original. Space-time resistance makes dealing with time bombs at the beginning easier. Things start getting out of hand in the final room, as a titan summons Ubbo-Sathla and Charon, and Charon summons Dreads. I have to teleport away, go back, and clean it up. Nothing unusual drops here, aside from 3rd level spellbooks for Marisa. Reward is Narya; I swap Reinforce Muscle ring for it. Going for Yukari Yakumo now. She has good stats - +10 speed, 6000 HP, 130 AC, 8d8/8d8/8d8/8d8 melee that can stun/mutate/drain all stats, dispel magic, Hand of Doom, darkness/light storms, disintegration balls, fire/ice storms, various summoning, teleportation (including teleporting next to you from out of line of sight), and has a special attack where she launches a train at you, hitting for 100+1d50 and teleporting away. I, however, have +26 speed when hasted at this point, so I'm outspeeding her, and 6000 HP isn't that much for 700+ average damage per round. Battle goes without any problems, and now I can proceed beyond level 50 of Angband; no interesting item drops. On level 53, I defeat my first wyrm (Great Bile Wyrm). I also run into friendly Santa Claus, who already has summoned more dragons; I attack and defeat him, but not before he summons more dragons, including Nidhogg. I teleport away, recover and go back and clean it up - including two more wyrms. Several ego-items and artifacts drop, but nothing in particular that I'd like to exchange my current equipment for. I run into a greater vault filled with various late-midgame uniques; nothing of note happens, but I'm getting to the point where 2 Rods of Perception aren't enough - with my +16 speed, I have to wait a lot for them to recharge. I have Stone of Lore on hand, but it's somewhat risky around monsters. Rods of Perception are a random reward at Dream Diary, but that's a Saturday reward - it'll be a very high level fight. I decide to switch to Stone of Lore; level 54 features a long, thin rectangular vault where I keep getting sniped as I try to advance. Situation escalates once Thuringwethil starts summoning support, so I have to teleport away and come back to clean it up. Nothing notable dropped except for sales fodder. Reached level 41, learned Wall of Stone (surround yourself with stone walls). Failure rate is high right now, though. RQ 56 is Vlad; again, summoning ensues and I have to retreat, but I manage to clean everything up. Rewards are mainly sales fodder. I find Cloak of Jack of Shadows on level 61; telepathy obtained. RQ 62 is Jisisl of Ice; again, defeated in melee with buffs with no trouble. Drops some interesting artifacts/items. I also find a Hihiirokane Sword on that level - reflavored Diamond Edge; would be very nice, except I already have a very powerful weapon. I clear the 'Stop the Little Sister' quest from Scarlet Devil Mansion. It's another one-on-one fight, this time against Flandre. +15 speed, 6000 HP, 20 AC, 15d15 shatter/22d20 fire/12d12 disenchant/12d12 chaos melee, uses Psycho-Spear, fire storms, disintegration balls, mana bolts, her personal Hand of Doom variation that's guaranateed to hit and also can drain stats/exp, summoning her clones. I've prepared a Potion of Ultramarine Orb (reflavored Invulnerability) for this fight; with 20 AC, she folds quickly in melee. Reward is 2 Potions of Augmentation; I'm getting close to maxing out my stats. |

Next up, 'Challenge a God' quest from Tengu Village. At first, you fight Kanako - +15 speed, 7700 HP, 150 AC, 12d12 powerful attack/14d14 purify/15d15 shatter/no damage disenchant melee, uses light storm, holy balls, tornadoes, lightning storms, Psycho-Spear. Strong, but doable; I buff myself and take her out in melee. However, at that point Suwako spawns, and you have to defeat her as well. +15 speed, 6000 HP, 120 AC, 12d12/12d12/10d10/10d10 melee, water/nether/darkness/poison/chaos breath, darkness storm, nether balls, pollution balls, summons monsters/greater undead. Summon Greater Undead alone makes her nastier; the quest is level 70 and you start out in open area, so it'll bring nasty monster right on top of you. I forget to set up wall of stone and get greater undead summoned on me; I have to teleport away and carefully clean them up.
Quest reward is Scroll of *Acquirement*. I read it in Angband, it gives me trash items. Since I'm approaching Cyberdemon depths, I'm going to need Shards resistance; I don't resist it right now, but I have an artifact armor at home with that resist. I star carrying it with me as swap equipment. I pick up 'Capture the Wanted Person' quest form Tengu Village - it's similar to Welcome to Gensoukyou, you have to find and defeat a certain unique. This time, it's Seija Kijin. Also, I forgot to mention that, but my character also has Barrier Guard ability. It's usually limited to spellcaster classes, but some good unique classes can use it as well. If you turn it on, half of the damage you take will be taken from your MP instead of HP; however, once your MP runs out or if you take too much damage, your guard will break, removing this effect and stunning you. Very useful for extra protection. I level up to 43 and learn Summon Lightning; hits a random enemy in sight with power lightning ball - damage is 273. Doesn't seem that good, it hits at random and uses a basic element (though several enemies are missing electricity resistance). Defeated Tiamat at level 68. Drops include Scarf of Buckland (artifact; [1, +19], +3 speed/stealth/WIS, rFear/Blind/Conf, rHoly as random resist). On level 70, drops include Diamond Dragon Scale Mail (rLight/Dark/Holy/Nether, free action, rFear/Conf/Blind/Insanity). Potential artifact creation target. Insanity resistance makes you unaffected by eldritch horrors and certain mental attacks. I also get last volume of Nature realm; spells include Tornado (hits target with tornado element ball; can teleport monsters around), Sunlight (hits everything in sight with light, magic mapping + detection; does not map out the entire level), Elemental Branding (brands a weapon with random element), Converge Water Veins (hits target with water ball, hurts a lot + can stun). Defeated my first Lord of Amber (Caine) at level 73; high level dragon were summoned as well, but most of the loot got wiped out by a disintegration vortex breath. Blood Curse goes off, but nothing lethal happens. Second Lord of Amber, Fiona, goes down as well. No Blood Curse, drops her dagger. Defeated Dio Brando, he drops Stone Mask. Brand gets defeated as well; no Blood Curse, drops his crossbow. Unfortunately, since in this mod you hold ranged weapons in your hands instead of having a separate slot, it's not as useful. RQ 76 is Loki; I was concerned about that fight, but the usual strategy of reducing space with Wall of Stone/Forest Creation and meleeing with buffs still worked. He drops Gloves of Peerlessness (reflavord Genji); that lets me dual-wield without horrible penalties, but I'm not proficient at dual wielding (maximum skill level 20); my accuracy still drops a lot and I don't get enough extra damage. Leaving them at exploration base for now. I find Crown of Numenor in Angband. I'm still going with Hammerhand, but it being generated is still good news: Several of Marisa's items are fixed artifacts, and this crown is one of them. If you pick that item when the artifact already was generated, you get a Scroll of Artifact Creation instead. I get my scroll and read it on the Diamond Dragon Scale Mail; it gets +4 STR/WIS/CHR/searching and resist shards. I lose +3 speed from my current randart armor, and my STR/WIS/CHR are maxed out anyway, but I get more AC and have a source of shard resists, making Cyberdemons not as deadly. Bull Gates drops another Gloves of Peerlessness. I defeated Gerrard; he drops a Ring of Speed +11. Blood Curse goes off, but nothing immediately dangerous happens. Next up, I attempt Shoreline Operation, Again quest. The goal is to defeat Saki Kurokuma, who will spawn at level 66 of Hell dungeon from now. The location you receive the quest from is very remote - you have to cross deep water squares to get to it (fortunately, I don't think they're as lethal as Hengband with its krakens - but I still got constantly ambushed at level 46), and you can't teleport to it. The dungeon itself is very nasty - the levels are open areas with harmful terrain full of demons/undead. It's hard to create forest/walls here, so I have to get through as quickly as possible. Saki is tough - +25 speed, 6400 HP, 150 AC, 15d15 shatter/15d15 stun/15d15 powerful attack/15d15 powerful attack, darkness storms, haste self, blink. I don't think she's guaranteed to spawn at level 66 - I had to attempt looking there multiple times. I think the level feeling changes if a wanted person for a quest is here. I defeat Saki and report; reward is Rod of Healing. I already found one earlier on, I'll be carrying 2 for now. |

I find yet another Peerlessness handwear in Angband, so I decide to try out dual wielding. I grab one of my Hihiirokane Swords (another potential target for Artifact Creation); accuracy significantly goes down, and total damage isn't increased by a lot; I'd like to train my skills to maximum to see how well I can perform. I also find a Black Hachimaki (ribbon slot; Black ego-items give +to speed) with +11 speed; I swap Buckland for it, now I'm at constant +27.
Corwin defeated. Eric, Dworkin, Bleys and Benedict are remaining alive Lords of Amber; Eric's Stronghold quest isn't used in normal game, so he'll be randomly found in the dungeon like the rest. Reached level 48, learned Nature's Wrath. Unlike Hengband version, it doesn't have the LoS damage effect, but it generates multiple balls of various elements centered on yourself, dealing more damage in total if you're next up to the enemy. Also turns floor into lava + earthquake. I should be ready for RQ 88 by now; Unicorn is now native to levels 100+, so she can't be the target. Destroyer is still a potential enemy. It is Sauron. He starts out in a horrible position - right next to Bleys and Eric. Since Lords of Amber are lawful and Sauron is chaotic in this mod, they start fighting. Fortunately, Sauron teleports away before it gets out of hand. I end up having to *Destroy* Bleys, and manage to find Sauron again. During fight, Eric gets in the way and ancient dragons get summoned, but I manage to separate them and beat down on Sauron alone. He drops Darnya and Ring of Tulkas; Tulkas is nice, but by physical stats are maxed out anyway, and I'm at the point where temporary speed boost is negligible. My Staff of *Destruction* was drained at this point, so I couldn't quickly wipe out the remaining enemies; I manage to teleport some wyrms away and finish Eric off. Blood Curse activates, Benedict gets summoned, and I have to leave the level as soon as possible. More equipment shuffling: I switch Narya for a Ring of Speed +11 and Stone of Lore for Levitation Stone of Laputa (+2 INT/CHR/speed); I still carry Lore in inventory as ID source. My melee damage drops, but I'm now at +35 constant speed. Also, I found a Ring of Speed and Heroism (+9) at some point, which gives me a temporary to-hit bonus. I decide to clean up Seija quest I've picked earlier. She spawns around level 50 and isn't that likely to appear in deep Angband; the most readily available area would be Dragon Lair. Level feeling will change if there's a wanted person on that level, so I keep going in and out until I get the proper feeling. Seija is a tricky boss. She only has 10 HP/120 AC, but she has 6/7 chance to negate any attack, 6/7 chance to immediately respawn upon being defeated, can teleport away leaving a decoy behind, can swap positions with you, and has some more normal spells - like disintegration balls and invulnerabliity. Basically, think Metal Babble-like monster that's hard to hit and take down, except without outright lethal attacks. With dual-wielding, I hit enough times per round to land hits past her barriers. Quest reward is $1000000 + Scroll of Artifact Creation. I recall to Angband and use it on my Hihiirokane Sword; it gets +4 INT/WIS/CHR and slay lawful/humans/undead. Since Lords of Ambers are lawful, those slays are appreciated. I run into Benedict. He's one of the most buffed Lords of Amber in this mod - he's native to level 90, making his attacks very accurate, and two of his attacks are now 16d16 powerful attack and 16d16 wounding attack. He also gets more powerful assortment of spells. I have to frequently heal and use my resources to recover HP and cure wounds; he goes down, Blood Curse happens but nothing dangerous, no notable drops. Bleys is up next; he drops Jewel of Judgment, I swap Levitation Stone for it. Blood Curse activates, nothing dangeorous happens. I've gathered enough items for Marisa to get the last item; to be more specific, it's not an item - it gives you the White Aura mutation (increases your luck). Going for Oberon now. I run several Dream Diary runs to try and build up some resources; I take a lot of Healing, *Healing*, Restore Mana, some Potions of Life, Scrolls of *Destruction*. Oberon, being the level 100 boss, is far tougher now - +35 speed, 20000 HP, 185 AC, 15d15/15d15/10d10 melee and 15d15 mana drain, new nasty spells - elemntal storms, rockets, disintegration, holy balls/holy fire, huge lasers, teleportation next to you from out of sight. Of course, old nasty spells like mana storms, dispel magic, summon Lords of Amber are still here. He also casts spells extremely intelligently - he's always aware of your resistances and never uses spells you'd be strong against. He also can use *Destruction* himself; when used against you, it halves your HP and teleports you away. I temporarily switch 'always generate small levels' option to get a small level for Oberon fight; at first, I teleport around and spam Staff of Destruction to build a summoning-unfriendly area. I'm going with standard strategy - double resist, heroism, stone skin, obscure vision with Forest Creation to get the first strike. Oberon is tough - he hurts a lot and keeps either teleporting himself away or blasting me away with *Destruction*. Dworkin gets summoned, but I manage to lead the fight away from him. Eventually, after a good amount of resources being consumed, Oberon is defeated. Drops include the Crown of Amber. With that, I've cleared the base game; however, there's a postgame level 100+ dungeon with Serpent at the end (and Serpent got buffed to make for a proper postgame boss). |
