For example, by using the last charge of a staff of teleport or earthquake (without a digging tool or means of recall/teleport/recharge/phase door/etc.).

Presumably you'd just have to wait it out until you starved to death?

Theoretically you can dig through solid granite with your bare fists -- a Dwarf Warrior (dwarves get an automatic digging bonus) can certainly dig through magma and I think quartz in reasonable timeframes. But yes, barring that it's entirely possible to get yourself stuck. Generally not recommended.

Instead of waiting to starve, you can use the Q command to commit suicide.

Interesting -- so it's more effective to dig with your hands than with certain weapons? With low strength, I've found that most weapons "don't affect granite", and I assumed taking off the weapon would only make things worse.

Or does "doesn't affect granite" just mean it will take an absurdly long time (rather than that digging through granite is outright impossible)?

I believe it's the latter, though I admit at this point I haven't actually looked at the digging code in a long time. I guess it may be possible to get yourself entirely stuck.

It should never be better to dig with your bare hands than to dig with a weapon, since weapon weight figures into the digging formula and hands have either zero weight or a very small weight.
