OS X: Purpose of ~/Angband/config?

I'm cleaning up the Cocoa port and I'm wondering if there is or was any reason for the config directory. It appears along with the normal ones, like user, save, apex, and so on. I don't think I've ever seen anything in it, nor can I find any other references to it.

Looks like it's a place for putting alternative build configuration stuff (flags etc) in. Also looks like it isn't used.
