the need for speed.

My dwarf warrior is at +50 speed, unhastened. I have a +16 speed ring, dropped by a great wyrm of thunder on depth 82.

He is sitting at depth 80'ish trying to gather some more *Healing* and Life potions. It takes a while, so I am glad I have ICold from Turmil (swap weapon).

If you dropped from +50 speed to +30 speed, you'd only be about 15% slower (from 4.5x normal speed to 3.8x). At +50 speed, for every turn a +30-speed monster gets, you get 1.18 turns -- so a bit more than once every 5 turns, you get an extra turn.

But congratulations. I've gotten a +16 ring only once, and it was pretty awesome.

I don't quite get your math. 1/0.18 = 5,56

He gets additional turn every 5,56 turns. That's quite correct. 18% increase in speed (not 15% what he said though).

Energy difference is 38 (+30) vs 45 (+50) = 0.8444... or other way 1.1842

Borg?

That's an error IMO in borg logic. He should aim for +30 but not value values over that very high.

+50 is impressive. Let me guess: Ringil, Belthronding, RoS +16, Elessar, Thalkettoth, Gondor, Feanor? Colluin to cover basic4, Fingolfin and Thorin for fighting stats and big RoDam in other ring slot.

Over the years people have frequently posted various theorycrafting that after a certain speed it becomes not worth it to get more, but I have always hoarded as much speed items as I can no matter how high it gets, and I have never regretted it. Getting an extra turn every 5 turns against the fastest of monsters (including Morgoth) is extremely useful.

It's all a question of tradeoffs. If you're at +30 speed, currently deal 500 damage in 5 blows/round, and you have a choice between a =Speed +12 or a =Damage +15, which one is preferable? The Speed ring will increase your damage by 10%, roughly, by giving you more turns to attack in. This also has some tactical advantage. The Damage ring will increase your damage by 15%. Against Morgoth, killing him an extra 5% faster means many fewer actions from him, which could be significant. After all, the main problem with fighting Morgoth is running out of consumables, and your use rate on consumables is largely dictated by Morgoth's actions, not your own. Of course, if your natural speed were lower, then the speed ring gets better, and depending on how you value those occasional free turns, you may decide that it's better anyway because 5% faster killing isn't big enough.

And that's not even getting into the tradeoffs from rings of power, or from things like a =Speed +5 or =CON +6. Bottom line is, speed has diminishing returns. Most games it's in limited-enough supply that you don't really reach a point where piling less speed on isn't worth it at some level, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

I definitely feel like speed is no longer worth very much by the late game...something happened where it's now ridiculously common, where it used to be that getting to +20 speed unhasted was considered moderately difficult. These days I usually find myself ditching items with speed that in the past I would have been ecstatic over because I'm well over+30 without even trying.
