And in unrelated news - DF gets Steam release

Hold on to your pants, Dwarf Fortress is getting a Steam release, *with* tiles.

Meh. I never cared for the tiles over the ascii interface. Also, he's spending all his work on getting Steam-ready and ignoring the very very long outstanding bug list. Last I looked it was still buggy enough that I won't play it without DFHack, which is presumably not available for the Steam version. (Besides, why is Steam preferable to the standalone versions anyway -- except for revenue I suppose?)

My understanding is there's a massive bunch of UI improvements that'll be in the free version as well as the steam release, a lot of them were long standing issues too.

Bug-wise he's probably introduced as many new bugs as he's fixed, but generally people who pay for stuff are less forgiving of bugs, and developers have less of an excuse not to fix them when someone is paying for a product.

Anyway, I'm actually looking forward to seeing the new version, though I'll probably wait for the classic release.

There is also a little tutorial and some ingame help now.
A few days ago there was this video with actual gameplay (by a newbie):

Also, additional the game will be available at itch.io:

There's a classic release out, for the cheapskates.

I haven't really looked at it outside of the starting menu and world gen, but it seems to now have mouse support.
