Did you put it on by any chance?

Never done it with rings, but if you read a scroll or zap a wand and the effect created doesn't cause you to learn what type it is, the game labels it {tried}.

No, I think it get identified when I picked it up and it was labeled (tried) in the inventory even before I put it on...
On the first time playing the first character, that's why I was surprised...

I'm under Win XP-SP2, Even if the games are ran in different directories, is it possible that temp files mess up with other version's one, like Vanilla for example ?

Also, there is a lack of description on the 'sneaking' mode, I think it going along with the 'Backstab' option which is also lacking description... Where can I find info about those ?

No. It'll be a bug in the code somewhere.

At the moment, the change logs, and the source code. Slowly to migrate into the help files. To get to sneak mode use 'S' or '#' (roguelike) - it will only affect monsters within 4 grids of you in line of sight, so its not worth using all the time.

I'm building UnAngband head on linux and for some reason it's not compiling maid-x11.c. At least, I think that's what's going on. My Autotools-fu is not necessarily good enough to figure out why that's happening. Here's my actions:

Code:
./bootstrap
./configure --prefix ~/angband/unsandbox
make
The error I get is:

Code:
gcc -g -O2 -fno-strength-reduce -Wall -Wextra -Wformat=0 -Wlogical-op -Wredundant-decls

I started trying to manually compile maid-x11.c, main-x11.c, etc. but ran out of time/patience and didn't get it working. Any advice?

(edited to fix long lines)

Looks to me like maid-x11.c is missing from a makefile somewhere.

Not quite up to date, but this worked for me last time I made a linux build:

cd unangband/src
make -f Makefile.std

then just copy the executable up a dir
