YACD - Looks promising, but this is where I usually die. :)

Well, this one looks promising so far...

http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=11313

But, this is about the point in the game where I make some incautious (in retrospect anyway) mistake and die. Maybe the problem is that now the character is starting to "feel" like she's turned a corner in terms of power, and thus the tendency to not run away quite soon enough.

In any case, I don't see anything I'm obviously missing before I plunge into the depths... we'll see how it goes...

:-)

You don't seem to have nexus resist other than those stability boots. I would carry them, nexus stat scrambling could ruin your game at this point. You could also use a bit more CON, but removing that RoS would put you below +10 speed which isn't good either. Without rPoison you might get insta-killed by Drolem.

Also stats below 18/xxx can get really badly hurt by time attacks, so be very careful when you see time-monsters (time vortex, time hounds you need to avoid because they would kill you, not because they might ruin your stats).

Tricky situation. Looks that you have basics OK, but diving deeper is a bit risky. Good luck with that char.

Yes, that's why I kept them, though I haven't been carrying them most of the time (which means they don't do me much good, I guess, do they? ). Maybe that is a good idea.

I've been keeping Osondir as a swap for more damage but using the ESP sword most of the time. It would be nice to have ESP from somewhere else so I can use a higher damage weapon all the time, but without that the ESP is hard---and probably unwise---to give up.

Thanks!

Updated (same ladder entry) - still alive and some lucky finds let me use Caspanion to free my rPoison ring slot and have permanent (unless I need to swap something) +25 speed. I traded the detection in Holhenneth for a better weapon, hoping to find some rods of detection one of these days.

More speed is almost always preferable over the elemental rings, I assume?

And when you look at the damage stats for a weapon, they don't take speed into account, right? (For example, if the mace says "avg 100 hp/round" but gives you double speed, it compares at 200/round against a weapon that doesn't give you the speed bonus - yes? Specifically in this case, of course, the damage numbers for Aglarang should be inflated for its +5 speed in order to compare fairly to other weapon options.)

Not at all. Branding rings are extremely powerful. You absolutely need to get your speed at least to +10 as a first priority, but beyond that you have to consider the tradeoffs. Looking at your dump, your ring of speed +7 is worth about 1 extra move after every 4, and speed is more useful than just that, maybe call it worth +30%. A branding ring going from 50/blow to 90/blow is +80% when it applies.

Generally speaking, you don't want to wear two rings of the same type. Even if equal, the second one is typically significantly less useful than the first.

Ugh, my last character had his CON switched with CHA. Sure ruined my night. His HP halved. I continued, but my heart wasn't in it. I really didn't feel like grinding through orc horde after orc horde for 8 !CON to get back up to 18.

I've gotten most things high enough now that although it would be pretty painful to get a bad swap, I could continue... maybe retreat up a few levels for awhile. I'm still carrying the stability boots just in case though, anyway.

I'm trying swapping +7 speed away in return for the ring of acid for awhile -- seems to be having pretty good results so far...
