One element I'm planning for a game I'm designing and creating the graphics for these days is dungeon furniture.
What if we could add stuff such as tables, chairs, bookshelves, urns, statues and more, that could be used as partial covers, full covers, crushed/smashed/pushed/pulled infront of doors etc within Angband Check out this link to a few graphical previews for the dungeon furniture in the other game here: http://www.ironthrone.no/?page_id=572 *edit: added some words*

The main idea behind the suggestion is to have some or all rooms have "furnitures" in them, either old and worn or plain broken debris, making the game a bit more pleasant to the eye rather than "just" naked rooms filled with monsters and loot

A concept based on my idea above, the urns, shelves, tables etc are fetched from Legendary, the game I mentioned earlier:

This looks awesome. If we get proper support for your tiles in Angband, I might finally give up ASCII.

I started down this path in Unangband. What happens is you need to figure out how to place them in interesting positions in a room - which is about as much effort as actually making functional terrain. Which is how Unangband ended up with so many terrain types...
