Orb-killing is a perfectly viable strategy, yeah. You can also carry in some devices, which won't be as effective as they would be for a mage, but I expect Annihilation will probably be worthwhile at least. Not being in melee range of Morgoth also allows you to carry Staff of the Magi (those still exist, right?), which restores mana and can be recharged (this probably theoretically lets mages kill Morgoth without using any consumables outside of maybe a staff or two that explodes, if you're careful).

Staff of magi is ridiculously rare. You're likely to find no more than one in a game.

staff of magi isn't anywhere near as rare as, say, ammo of holy might.

anyway, i killed sauron, but i fought morgoth and had to bail out. the reason being, i only have one rod of speed and no potions, so i could not keep my speed over 30. i do carry rods of slow monster, but that's not enough.

i'm now grinding DL99 for another rod or two, maybe some potions. shouldn't be long.

i found a weapon +2 blows of slay evil that gives me .. wait for it .. 345 vs evil.
pathetic.

this took forever.

i had a ludicrous number of consumables, something like 32 !Heal, 18 *Heal, 9 !Life, 40 CCW, at least 5 MBan, 30 !Mana, and 13 !Speed.

i kept blinking, laying rune, melee. morgoth summoned a ton of stuff, but they never managed to move as fast as me or morgoth. i did have to TO some stuff away, like black reavers, and several dangerous uniques: vecna, glaurung, tarrasque, etc.

thoughs on the priest:

1. i like that you can Orb everything; and that it has a huge area. I did not like that you are pretty much incapable of taking down *some* uniques, like the tarrasque, because they are not evil and they take half the damage.

2. clairvoyance is great. the spell selection is great, but i didn't use about half of my spells EVER. some remained uncast (yellow name) through the run. i'm not sure why we have the same spells twice, too.

3. there's no need ever to use Healing if you can cast Heal with lower fail rate.

4. annihilation and word of power have redonkolous high fail rates.

5. banish evil banished uniques as well which is annoying if you want to strip them of their summons / escort.

6. melee is pitiful, i've never had a mage do so little damage as this priest.

all in all, it's easier to play than the mage, needs almost no consumables, but lacks the specialized attacks which make it easier to take on dangerous mobs. Safe, but not exciting.

Healing is a bigger heal than Heal -- 1000 HP instead of 300. But yeah, if you had to pick one of the two, take Heal.

Banish Evil is a mass teleport-away, it's not like anything else with "banish" in its name. The monsters remain on the level and you can track them down individually if you want to.

As you say, the priest is safe but not particularly exciting. I generally feel like priests have better utility than mages; big heals, Detection, and Clairvoyance are huge. But they have fewer interesting spells.

Their combat is marginally better than mage combat, for what it's worth. It's just not very good.

The "exciting" part when playing priests is in the midgame, when you feel great because all that utility kicks in but you detect only evil and never know if the Phoenix is heading for you right now or not.

If you want to take down the Tarrasque for whatever reason, use a launcher. Priests gets resist fire/cold as spell, so its very doable and slay animal ammo is plentiful.

you know, i *did * use resist fire&cold at least twice.

if i were to make one change to the priest, it would be to lower considerably the fail rate for annihilation - the mana cost is punishing already. just like MBan for mages, it gives you something to look forward to when you hit CL50.

Priest clairvoyance spell used to be the thing to look forward to - it worked like !enlightenment. Just like mages didnt have to carry banishment scrolls, so priests could do without those potions. Sadly, it got nerfed into fuzziness and priests never got anything back - "Healing is enough".

I dont think annihilation should become the best damage spell in the game - that privilege clearly belongs to the mage. In fact, I like the progression melee - orb - back to melee, the more phases a class gets during their journey the better.

You were a bit unlucky in your run to only get 300ish melee damage, even without extra attacks you can normally get to 400 vs evil with a decent weapon and more is entirely possible.

considering how much it costs, if you were to lower the cast fail rate to 10% (with CL50 and WIS ***) it would not really do much more damage than Orb. And annihilation only hits live targets.

It in no way compares to the mage. Mage has chaos strike (hurts everything), MM (hits *everything*, including death molds), acid bolt(huge damage for minimal mana), ice storm (stun), Rift (blinks enemies), a better banish, before we even go look at Mana Strike.

@sky--
When you use +attacks weapons, you'll often want a damage ring to help up the melee. (Especially with standard artifacts where +attacks artifacts do significantly less damage per blow than the top melee artifacts) If you'd used one with your priest, you'd conservatively have been doing 440 dam/round. Consider carrying !Hero and !Berserk as well when you go up against the bosses. Priests have the same poor melee skills that Rangers get, and without the heavy spell support (though still not as bad as Mages.)
