Max amount of spells?
Ok so I'm rolling my high-elf ranger and I've got a 9 more spells I could learn, my question is should I save these points for more important spells or should I get every available spell? I'm afraid that if I use them now when I get to a higher level I will run out of available points to spend on the better spells in the game...

It's quite unlikely that you will not be able to learn important spells. When you will have the dungeon spell books you probably will have found some INT potions too.
If you want to have something in reserve, learn only the spells you need or that are useful at a time. |

The total number of spells you can learn (by level 50, anyway) is the same as the number of spells in the books. So, if your INT/WIS and your level are high enough, you'll eventually learn all the spells in the books.
There's really no need to worry about not having enough points to get a spell. Don't have enough points now? -- you'll get more when you gain levels. ![]() |

There are two good reasons not to learn spells right away. 1.) If you get stat drained and you have no outstanding spells to learn, you will temporarily forget the most recent learned spells. You want to make sure that none of the spells lost are spells you really need. 2.) You don't want to cast silly spells by accident. (Wonder comes to mind.) |

1. You gain a fixed amount of XP for the spell the first time you cast it. 10XP is harder to come by the higher your level gets. If you find certain levels hard to get through (I find it very frustrating getting from CL9 to CL11 as a mage - and you can cast ID at CL11 as a mage) then it may be worth holding your spells over. I usually don't have to do anything except learn and cast spells to get from CL9 to CL11. Mind you Mages get a lot more spells than rangers do so the results are VERY class related. 2. IF you are playing a priest - then by not gaining spells for a few levels you can make sure that you will gain Orb of Destruction at the earliest possible time ![]() ![]()

![]() How much better would V be if there were 50 spells available but a mage could only learn 30 of them? (vary the numbers as required, but the point is there should be enough spells that you have to decide which ones to learn! ![]()

Or if you could invest some of those "learn" points into upgrading spells, so you end up knowing fewer spells but the ones you do know are more powerful/efficient?

Mages should be able to learn everything.
You can always challenge yourself by not using all learn points. |

mages should be able to learn ANY of the mage spells (at the moment they cannot - eg: Detect treasure, Detect objects). Mages should not be able to learn ALL of the mage spells. Priests should not be able to learn ALL of the priest spells. I like Dragonbonemans' suggestion to use learn points to for example "improve" MM from a 1 mana spell to a 2 mana spell which does double the damage. There are already spells I never bother learning. It would be nice to be able to choose something else to do with the learn points.

This sounds like something that would go in a variant, as opposed to Vanilla.
