Double height tiles: which type of cursor?
See below...

The one that goes round the whole tile, definitely. New players will be confused otherwise, and think that the excluded half is a separate entity.

Actually, I'd personally prefer the one that goes around the base, not the whole tile - makes it easier to see which tile the monster is actually in, and doesn't give the mistaken impression that the monster actually takes up two tiles!

How about if the cursor goes underneath the tile in back, instead of in front? So you'd see three lines and part of a fourth.

are you guys taking screenshots of a nokia screen gameplay? They're so tiny I can barely make out what is in them.
But for what it's worth, I'd only use the base 64x64 of double height tiles. If players understand that by selecting the base of any tile, they won't be confused, and are able to easily select any creatures positioned behind double height creatures. What would be *really* nice is if the focus could shift to the tile in back if you are targeting it, so it would be redrawn in front when the focus is on it.
In the absence of this, I'd say that just around the 64x64 grid is the way to go. |

Or a tiny spot somewhere that displayed the icon of the current selected monster/item/npc and also displayed the info regarding what was selected...that would be something

For my variant, I have implemented an intermediate solution: if nothing that can be targeted is under the top part, I draw a double height cursor; otherwise, I draw a normal cursor.
