Maybe use a different tval for throwing weapons? Seems to me weapons meant for throwing (a throwing hammer but not a spear) should have a different set of properties and egos available to get than normal weapons have. And weapons good for both melee and throwing (I think that would only be the dagger and spear) should be able to get both normal weapon egos or throwing egos. It doesn't make sense for a throwing axe to get an ego that only does anything if you wield it in melee.
(I plan to do this for my variant, but I think it should be in V also)

Mystery resolved. It works perfectly, unless you play with "know flavors"/"know runes" activated in the birth options, then you get the "a Ring of Power" when viewed from a distance.

This seems fair, and I've filed it as an issue. IIRC the current situation was because of some dodge at some point involving sticky curses.

If this were included (which I'm on the fence about), I think throwing would probably override hafted etc. Either way this isn't do-able for 4.2.3, because it would break savefile compatibility (I know this after having incautiously added dragon armors as an extra ignore type in 4.0.3).

What about the problem with double stacks of items and using from second stack actually depleting the first? (you have 40 phase doors + 10 phase doors, you use a scroll from the pile of 10 and end up with 39+10 instead of 40+9)

Odd message, that is a bit of an information leak to the player.

"Smeagol tries to pick up (nothing), but fails. <3x>"

As a player, I knew from the message that there had to be an artifact just out of sight. @ had ESP, so was aware of Smeagol, but hadn't yet seen the out of sight artifact.
