I got a dagger of slay giant (+4,+4) <+1>, a nice stolen present for my early mage. I mugged him with a lance of slay orc--it was too heavy to wield, and I was just lagging it back to town for ID. But I couldn't kill him with spells, and 2d8+7 did just enough damage

Nice, I just killed him with my standard dagger. It took a while but not too hard.

Ideas for other town US holiday celebrations that might be actually doable in the current game structure:

New Year's Eve/Day - every townsperson is a singing happy drunk.

Valentine's Day: townspeople are either walking around in twos, or they are aggravated (because they don't have a date).

Easter: the Easter Bunny, of course! Kill it to get the goodies (food and/or a couple random potions)

US Independence Day: some of the townspeople firing off magic missiles in random directions.

US Labor Day: all shops closed for one trip to town on the real-time day in question.

Halloween: poltergeists/witches/zombies/etc running around town, but they are townspeople in costume (they have normal townsperson HP/abilities).

US Thanksgiving: while in town, you and the townspeople are 100% fed and thus slowed (not in the dungeon for obvious reasons).

Without the lance, he was healing faster than i was pecking away. I was CL 18, but with really terrible equipment.

Angband is an international day, after all, so US holidays dont make sense. That said, townspeople should certainly come bearing gifts on Sept 22.

Just to clarify for everyone, that was more of a for-fun thought exercise than anything that I was seriously suggesting. Still, firing up a new game today and seeing the town overrun with singing happy drunks would have been a trip.

I agree, as long as on January 1 they're all inside hungover and watching football, parades, etc.
