Hello,
I have recently started playing Angband for the first time since 2005. I've gotten my mage to a place where I think that it's time to start maxing out my stats. There used to be a spoiler which told me what level was most likely to produce "gain" potions (i.e. gain dexterity, intelligence, etc). I don't remember what the level was, and I can't seem to find it now. I thought that it was under "Other spoilers" on this page http://www.thangorodrim.net/spoilers/, but all of these links are apparently stale. Does anyone know what level I am looking for or even how I might go about determining it? Thanks in advance ... |

All objects have "allocation" settings defined in their entry in the object.txt file, which is in /lib/edit. These are the lines that start with A: and have the form "A: X : Y to Z". The number you're looking for is Y, which is the minimum effective depth at which the item can appear. (Items can of course appear "out of depth", but if you're farming you want to find the shallowest in-depth.) Note that I said effective depth. For objects generated on the floor, this is of course the dungeon level. For monster drops, unless I'm out of date, this is determined by the average of the dungeon level and the level of the monster that dropped the item. Monster levels are shown in lib/edit/monster.txt, the first field on the W: line It used to be the case that stat potions came in-depth at 1500' and that your best hunting ground was troll pits at 1650' (the weakest troll type, the forest troll, being native to 1350', giving you an average of 1500' for their drops). Importantly this was before gravity hounds came in-depth. I have no idea if that's still right, so if you want to be certain you can check the edit files for the depths, and check the source for the effective level calculation (look for a function called mon_create_drop IIRC).

Checking 3.5, it looks like stat-gain potions are native starting at dungeon level 30.
And I believe the current drop rule is max(monster's native depth, average(monster depth, dungeon depth)). So for example, if you're at 1500' and you kill a monster native to 2000', then its drop will be based on 2000'; if you're at 1500' and kill a monster native to 1000', then its drop will be based on 1250'. |
