Sil - knowledge base

I'm completely new to Angband but Sil was highly recommended and so far I'm really enjoying both the game play and the flavour.

Just got a character to 450' (a new record for me) and got lore-master for the first time. What struck me was that whilst it was great to get the exp and to know what things were, I was still rather in the dark about a lot of my inventory actually did. I knew I had a staff of sanctity but no idea what that meant.

I got smashed to hell by a giant I couldn't escape from so it was sort of academic but I was wondering if there was any way to look up what things did?

Thanks for the great game and any advice!

There are textfiles where you can read about everything, but this might take away a lot of fun in initial exploration. You can also ask questions here.

There also is the monster and object memory in game, with lore-master you can access the whole thing, otherwise only what you encountered so far.

Sanctity uncurses wielded / worn cursed items (e.g. dex -1 rings, some weapons) - when you have lore-master you usually don't need sanctity unless you really want to use one of the cursed weapons (which can be quite good).

Ha! At least it wouldn't have saved me. Thanks for the response!

I'm used to playing NetHack, so am not too fussed about spoilers - how does one go about finding these text files?

I guess what I'm really after is just a vague idea, like weapons of Doriath do this, staves of imprisonment do that.
I don't like starting off a roguelike with no knowledge of how things work. (I'm sure people will argue this ruins the fun...)

Well, Sil is nothing like Nethack, everything is very transparent. Read the manual - it is good and explains ALL the inner workings of combat, stealth, moral system. Actually just reading the descriptions should do for things like staff of sanctity and weapon of doriath - more than a vague idea, you will know exactly what happens just by reading the manual and the description. (It slays spiders and wolves = gives an extra damage die against them, glows when they are near and gives them a moral penalty when you hit them.)

The in-game object / monster memory, when you took lore-master anyway, is the best interface to read literally everything. (The txt-files are in /lib/edit)

I think what you're looking for is the e(x)amine command!

Thanks for the responses!
I actually have read the manual and I think it's excellent at explaining the game's mechanics.

Feel silly about the e(x)amine command. I used that on an amulet of adornment and since I didn't feel too enlightened I just stopped using it. I have a feeling that might have been hasty and foolish...

Edit: Yeah, that was exactly what I was looking for! I have to say I'm enjoying playing a roguelike without flicking through 3 chrome windows the whole time!
