Rogue playstyle

Man, I'm having a tough time with Rogue. I tried hobbit, gnome, and now high-elf. I can't seem to get any of my rogues through stat-gain. I keep dying to carelessness at some point.

The stealth and detection makes me dive, dive, dive, but the melee makes me careless. I'm much more used to playing warrior melee, I guess.

Any good tips for rogue play?

My favourite rogue is HT rogue. Spells kick in later, but its worth the wait. Unlike them midgets, they can actually kill things from the start.

I just had a fast win with a dwarf rogue. Just play whatever race suits you best. Don't be afraid of int or glove penalties.

The classic rogue combos tend to optimize for stealth. Try a build with balanced STR/DEX/CON and nothing on INT. Play like a warrior with detection at the beginning. The really good rogue spells don't kick in til late (except detect objects). Do not try to kill everything. Dive hard and snipe high value monsters. ***DO NOT CLEAR LEVELS.***

Pete's advice worked wonders. Stacking CON instead of INT helped me quite a bit. I died because I thought I was strong enough to kill Gorlim, but I didn't realize that his water bolts could knock me out.

I had been doing really well, halfway through stat-gain, with strong ranged and melee. I had picked up an early handgear of Dex+5, had just gotten to +11 speed from ring/boots, had rBase+poison covered, and was using a westernesse giving me ~100-150 dmg per turn, with xBow of Power(+11,+24) giving me 81 dmg per turn.

I was diving, and learning to snipe targets, while avoiding others.

I thought I could kill Gorlim, and I was well on my way to doing so, but didn't realize that his water bolts could knock me out. I had isolated him down a long corridor, gotten him to <half health, was mixing in bolts and CureSerious to offset his spell dmg. I was at +20 speed with him at +10, so no chance of a double-move. I just didn't realize that consecutive water bolts would knock me out.

I guess my past winners never went up against him so weak? or had pStun or something. Not sure. My past winners are HT warrior and HE mage. They were a couple years ago, though, so maybe I just forgot.

Maybe your previous characters fought him deeper and by that time they were using CCW for restoring HP which also cures stunning.

Any time you suffer "heavy stun" and aren't able to remove it, it's time to abort mission. Because, as far as I am aware, there is nothing between heavy stun and knocked out. In other words, the next effect you are suffering after heavy stun is being knocked out.

Stunning of any kind is a serious debuff to practically everything you do -- your attacks are inaccurate and do less damage, your spell and device failure rates skyrocket, etc. Just because you can still see straight and walk in a straight line doesn't mean you should ignore being stunned. It's worth curing as soon as you get it.

Bottom line: Gorlim at or near native level if you aren't clearing levels is way too dangerous. He's up there with Kavlax and Osse for creatures to avoid.
