If I'm doing that I just re-map permanent walls to another color. It's a lot less dangerous than switching to a display mode where I can't tell Morgoth from a filthy street urchin.

I can fit a lot more of the map on the screen if I'm in ASCII mode - I like it better. You get used to it pretty quick.

It's kindof hard to mistake Morgoth for a filthy street urchin when one never leaves the town and the other is always on dL100.

Unless some joker's messed with your edit files.
"Morgoth begs you for money -more-
The filthy street urchin breathes nether! You die..."

Anyway, I prefer ASCII. I've been using it since I started playing, and I've gotten used to it. I even use it for Dwarf Fortress and other games that let me.

I started playing Umoria too, so I love the old tiles. I tried the Bolt/Gervais tiles, but they freak me out. I have actually deleted variants without trying them because of sole ASCII support - I don't see how you guys do it, heh. I suppose it is all about comfort.

You need to spend some time with Renewal Theory before you get used to ASCII graphics.

I prefer ASCII because it's easy to see and I can fit large amounts on my screen without worrying about image artifacts.

After using ASCII for my entire *band "career", I just had a brief experiment with Mr. Bolt's tiles. I kept shooting at piles of treasure, couldn't instantly recognize any monsters, and died.
I'm not slagging off the tiles themselves, but it's hard to adapt.

I choose to ASCII. Because it leaves a lot of room for imagination. I see Angband way I want it to be. And not as the author sees a set of tiles. And if I play with the tiles, it seems to me that I'm playing a normal RPG with very bad graphics, but not roguelike.
For me, ASCII-graphics is an integral part of Angband.
But I am not a fan of old school. Just Angband much more interesting than modern RPGs.

I use ASCII and actually can't play with tiles, does not matter the size or the tileset, but that is just my personal preference, that's how I started and is the only way I can recognize the enemies and items on the dungeon floor.

The only thing I can say, imo, is that you cant play comfortably with tiles and also have the same game area(you need to "zoom in" the game) and I feel claustrophobic on much smaller areas

I use Shockbolt tiles zoomed out to 2x1 and have no problem at all. Each to his or her own, I guess.
