Personally I like surprises that are my fault ("Oh, they can breathe nether. My bad. Rerolll."), but I don't like surprises that are a bit less my fault ("What the hell just breathed nether all over me? Humph. Reroll"). And that's why I don't play with full monster memory.

Argh! Another insta-death by a poison attack from an ancient multihued D. And I had the sucker detected, but didn't think it would be on line of sight yet. After playing every once in a while for years I have now had 4 characters past level 40 and two of them killed by ancient multihued D and two by plasma hound. How was it what Garry Kasparov once said: "Everyone makes mistakes, but only an idiot repeats his errors."
On the very previous levels I had just eliminated a nest full of fire dragons and the Balrog of Moria with his friends with no trouble at all. Stats ere maxed, levels were rising rapidly and I kept getting nice items I had never seen before and then I go and blow it on a safe level with no items. There's nothing dangerous there so I can just keep walking and singing without any worries, right? Oh, there is a killer D I need to concentrate in just a bit, but first I'm just taking these few steps and ... poof ... aaand mr Túrin Turambar met his maker. Heck I should propably scam for murderous levels just to be safer, since I never die on those... I had even just found my very first ever special amulet. Ironically it gave me pFear and fear is exactly what I lacked on that level. After these deaths I often wonder if I have what it takes to kill that bastard Morgoth. After clearing the beginning I always run easily to some 2500 feet and just when everything is going smoothly I get myself wasted in some very stupid manner. I could handle any enemy in those depths, but I can't keep myself from playing when tired or bored. Maybe I just should keep one of those rPoison rings in my finger at all times... But then again, IF I name my next character Beren son of Barahir, he HAS to get there. But instead of just taking his silmaril, this time Beren will go and put Morgoth on his kneels to beg for forgiveness on his crimes against my ancestors. THIS time he'll see. |

Even knowing what they're like, it's easy to forget how much more powerful they are than ordinary 1-hued dragons. Poison itself seems to be very powerful in Angband. Probably 9 out of my last 10 deaths were from someone's poison. I actually died fighting Morgoth because something else nearby hit me with poison. So yeah, I would suggest not only wearing your poison resist, but carrying some method to give yourself magical RPois too. I'm in love with the cloak "Colluin" for that reason, because it has both. |

Lategame, my rogue just had picked up (but not equipped) The One in a minor vault. A purple C (I am using the option to have all uniques in purple) closes in; I am wondering who it might be. Some Z appear; oh hello Drauglin! I can take him on, but check the summoned Zs: they are harmless. Enter melee - killed by Carcharoth, the Jaws of Thirst.

Ethereal Dragon with passwall, character not smart enough to use "reveal monsters" spell on a regular basis and using staff of Detect invisible too sparingly. Kobold Rogue with not enough CON yet... Boom!

Yesterday I was playing a possessor type character in ToME-SX, and apparently the body I chose was too frail; even at XL24 I had a max HP of 51. So I was extra careful but not careful enough, and eventually got shot with a water bolt and died instantly. Here: http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=18762
*edit* As a mage, stepped into a seeker bolt trap on Barrow-downs 1. Instantly dead. ![]() Last edited by AmyBSOD; March 12, 2016 at 21:22. |
