What are the big changes coming for 4.2.0?

I heard the last 4.1 release is out and work is beginning on 4.2 What be goodies can we expect to see?

Big change to classes (less books, 3 new classes) - these are already in the development master branch
Similar (probably less radical) overhaul of races
Complete overhaul of the monster list
Rework of the artifact list and random artifact generation
Some more work on dungeon generation

There have been suggestions that the scale of changes means the next version should actually be 5.0.

You've previously mentioned stepping down after all the changes are done, so I'd suggest that the 4.x series should be your domain. Let 5.x be the domain of your replacement.

Nah. Version numbers should reflect scope of change, and Nick's scope is pretty huge.

So we go 3.5 (end of the previous era) to 4.0 to 4.1 then straight to 5.0? 4.0 and 4.1 were not significant departures from 3.5.

I prefer to think of them as 3.9.x versions and 4.2 as the 4.0 of Nick's reign of terror.

I'd say take a leaf from the corporate handbook. Release version 8. CPB made it to 7 & it's only just started.

Why settle for information, when you can download the nightlies and give them a test drive?
