Comp 163

Competition 163 is up!

It's an FAangband Vanilla-town Petty-dwarf Assassin, in honor of all the hard restructuring work that our inimitable Vanilla maintainer has been doing.

Now go out there and restructure some orc faces.

not sure what happened, but about an hour into play I decided to ^X, and got the message "Saving Failed..." and the game exited.

That's weird. Did anything appear in you save directory?

You clearly don't know about the FAangband design philosophy. You roll d20 on every ^x or ^s and if you roll a 1, it crashes without writing to disk.

And I assume that wasn't updated.

Is this in Windows? I seem to recall some issue with permissions to save if the folder isn't in your My Documents directory (or something like that) with newer versions of Windows - you could possibly try testing different locations.

did you compile from source? i did and i had to add -DHAVE_MKDIR to the compile flags. in linux if you compiled without the flag you can still create the directories by hand:
mkdir ~/.angband
mkdir ~/.angband/FAangband
mkdir ~/.angband/FAangband/save
and then ^S should work

Everything is going fine on all my successive dives, guessing it was related to being the first time I saved somehow.

Also, curious how score is calculated for the competition? Before I died, I had less xp and more turns, but was ranked above Murphy, so score can't be just xp. Is it related to how many uniques you kill?

Score is an actual field in your chardump. I have no idea how it's computed. I'm guessing xp is part of it, but I'm not sure what else goes in there.

As of right now, you had 181516 score / 686537 turns = ~0.26
Murphy had 244295 / 798746 = ~0.31, so he indeed would be ranked above you.
