Talking YASD, and I mean really really _S_

Lol, got so greedy and silly careless stupid death that I have not had in a looooong time. =P

Gnome mage, having passed scumming low 30s for some stats & util, was diving to 90+ to start leveling and gearing up. Telepathy, TONS of speed (+9 boots, +3 torso, 2x +4 rings of escaping, haste self, so +30). Nothing to worry about as long as playing carefully, right?

I think I forgot the carefully playing part. I sometimes read about how people have trouble passing a single stat potion. Or lots of trouble passing a dangerous Experience potion, or Augmentation potion. Well get this: I succumbed to greed to kill nether hounds because they were worth over 10k xp a pop!!! I mean, lol? I had found a resist nether chest during the dive, so swapped it on and started Raal's tomeing the hounds. Had taken half of the pack (bout 4-5) down in first pull, and had the rest (again I think 4 or 5) in this group. Sooo, was down to 100hp and decided to, yep, I decided to:

A) not eat that mushroom of emergency
B) not read that teleport level
C) not read that *destruct* either
D) not teleport self with 1% fail
E) not be in the position in the first place (3 steps from LoS breakage)

I decided:
F) TAKE THREE STEPS TO GO INTO THE CORRIDOR! At about 100hp vs. 4 nether hounds in LoS

Yes. Amazing. Like. Rofl. Totally ... I mean ... amazing. Compared to my regular playing the past couple of years (usually with new versions my high score list had it's first entry a winner, all alone, like this new version as well, I play pretty carefully nowadays =P even diving ...)

So, mental note: no, 5 nether hounds does not equal half a potion of experience. Just skip em. Really. Well maybe be careful killing em ... I mean it's like a potion of experience just up for grabs! ... Argh ... must resist ...

So you died *because* you had nether resistance.

I've always argued that nether resistance is of minimal value. It hadn't occurred to me that it might have negative value!

Meh. By that logic Anduril is of negative value, because once I found it I thought I was invincible and died 3 minutes later fighting an OOD unique =)

I was making a joke, because if every good item is of negative value, then what are you left with?

edit: and I know Eddie was half-kidding, I was just playing along.

I never thought it had negative value, but it's surely worth less than rDark, except when going up against Azriel and Carcharoth, where average damage really does matter.

Anyway, nether hounds are only worth 6000 EXP. What you really want are Chaos hounds, which are about 15000 EXP each. They are a whole lot weaker than any other 15K kill; they are even worth killing without rChaos

Is there bonus xp for being low lvl then? I definitely remember over 10k value in the recall for it (I checked ... should not have, lol).

As a side note, I am definitely going for just blind+conf and "base" 5 (ya know, poison...) as required. Maybe keep swaps around for uniques. Just ignore high dmging other mobs. Almost lost my current rogue to a ... hmm... well big D nether dragon whichever it was. I have quite nice dmg on him so I just figured I'd drop it in a couple of rounds and blamo, from 350 to 100hp. Then I figured I'm playing too fast and loose for some reason.

Now the rogue is descending happily alive towards 90s (around 50 now I think). Have 12 base speed, base 5 + blind/conf and disenchant (well I think dark too) resists. Scythe of Gondolin, I'm going for the critical hit "build" based on what I calculated with spreadsheets earlier in another thread. Lets just say Smaug never knew what hit him, lol. I think I took like 3 bubbles in one round of couple superb crits, mwahaha. I was like, what, where did he go? Oh he died ... Neat.

Hoping for that MoD of funkythings to get jiggy with.

Here's the relevant code for awarding experience, from monster/monster2.c:
Code:
        /* Player level */
        div = p_ptr->lev;

        /* Give some experience for the kill */
        new_exp = ((long)r_ptr->mexp * r_ptr->level) / div;
In other words, experience = (monster's listed experience factor * monster's native depth) / (character's current level). Fang has an experience factor of 30 and a native depth of 2, so he's worth 60XP for a level-1 character, 30 for level-2, 20 for level-3, etc. Nether hounds have an experience factor of 5000 and a native depth of 51, so they can be worth as much as 255000XP (enough to get a human warrior to level 33 in one fell swoop!) and as little as 5100XP.
