Oh, and Leon has a question:

What I need now is to find out what code was actually done by the
uncontacted folks. A. Sidwell seems unclear on some, but he should know
about the modern chaps. Would you ask this on the Forum thread? When I
find out what he knows, I will do the necessary research to find out the
rest.
I don't know why he couldn't ask himself, maybe he only had access to e-mail.
I think that he want to know which specific functions still have code by non-contacted people.

Heh. That's what I get for scanning the page and not reading it properly. Emailed; thanks.

I believe the only encumberances for Sangband that also apply to current Vanilla are:
* Peter Berger (the UNIX signal handling may or not be based on his code)
* Chris Ang (some 2.5 changes still around, if not in code, in derivative form, see http://entai.co.uk/projects/angband/osi.lua/Chris%20Ang)
* Randy Hutson (the RNG code)

Luckily, all these people are accessible; I've just sent off letters to Chris and Randy.

The biggest concern for Sangband is Eric Bock, but his code is not present in Vanilla--I can't advise there, because Leon's the person who imported most of his code.

I noticed that Kieron Dunbar has been active on r.g.r.m this april:
http://angband.oook.cz/rgrm.php?showpost=94238
Getting his permission would be better than to remove his code.

I agree. However, I've emailed him several times, left notes for him on IRC and soforth with no replies as yet. Given this, I have no option but to remove his code if I want a GPL'd version.

Permission granted. That gets V down to 7 names remaining.

Good.

About maid-x11, main-x11 and Denis Eropkin. I haven't been able to find anything else on this guy, other than that he ran a BBS in Russia, but that was quite some time ago. There's might be hope of finding him if we get someone who can read Russian do a search for his name with Cyrillic letters.
About his contributions, from reading maid-x11.c, he contributed the function that reads the .bmp files. So text-mode maid-x11 should be clean, which would allow us to make a GPL clean main-x11 if we remove graphics and the mouse copy&paste support. (There might be a better solution.)

EDIT:
I think I have a lead on Ross Becker

Sounds easy enough. Hopefully the GTK2 port can be the "nice" Unix port, and X11 can be the "universal" Unix port. On the other hand, it might be OK to replace the code with libpng support at some point in the future.

EDIT: looks like the libpng distribution includes a PNG->XImage convertor, so it's probably very little effort to use PNG instead. (The Mac and SDL ports already use PNG.)

Just received an email from Randy giving his permission. Just waiting for Chris now.
