I voted 2.9.3, to be clear, that is purely from a game play perspective, not UI.

I'm not a old-time Angband player, so I can't comment on the older versions though I can imagine that I would really enjoy them with an updated UI.

Additionally, I've never played much Vanilla and haven't played any in recent times. I'd have to vote for something prior to the introduction of ID-by-use. I think that was the a turning point for Vanilla for me (as well as the removal of sticky curses).

Don't get me wrong, I like the concept of ID-by-use in general, but I don't like Vanilla's implementation of it , and I don't think that I like the concept of ID-by-use in Vanilla, but I'm a little torn on the subject because ID-by-use is clearly a better system.

... so I haven't cast a vote yet .

I think for purposes of this poll you should only consider gameplay, not UI. Nobody's arguing that 3.3x has a worse UI than frog-knows.

Personally I feel like the JLE changes are the part that make Vanilla feel like not-Vanilla, so I went with 2.9.3. The 3.3x series is excellent though, and I feel that a few changes to the item and monster lists would go a long way to restoring that Vanilla feel.

That floored me. Thank you both.

For nostalgic reasons, I voted Angband 2.8.3.

I think nostalgia is going to skew the results quite a lot. Like a lot of people, I voted for the version which got me hooked on the game, which probably isn't the "best" version for any objective definition of best.

Rpoison makes sense for a theif themed amulet, but speed is just OP for such an item - it should be removed or I'll be forced to continue wearing one.

I'm with sethos. Speed is too valuable to occur on items with other useful properties.

i have to say 3.3.2 it's simply much better , it runs and feels like a well broke in car, comfortable, and the new the new acii look and ui improvements are wonderful! Now that being said.......there are a few game play changes i don't much care for

1. stores, don't like the general store fixed inventory and no lanterns, lack of magic items in weapon and armor shops, theres no need to spend that well earned gold.

2.I miss my potions of restore stat. Stat drain and expereince drain have ever been annoying, but I can see the reason behind why it's there. They have been there since moria though, so it feels like the game is missing something without them.

Now that being said there is alot of things i do like, I think it's close to being the best yet.

What i would like to see done though is taking the ui improvements of angband 3.3.2 and applying it to frog-knows for expereimental purposes just to be able to compare the 2.

While that would be fascinating and I'd love to try playing it, it'd also be a pretty monumental task. Do we even have the source to frog-knows? Deciphering its dungeon generation, monster AI, etc. without that would be quite a challenge.
