One possibility is something weak that picks up things (like a ghost) and something a bit bigger that tramples over it. Something like giant fire ant can trample over any low level thief. Air Elemental OTOH is a good candidate. Fast, erratic and crushes things and tramples over weaker monsters too.

Wait until you find two of those in same level.

"cool, a GCV, lets find out if there is something else in this level before teleporting nasties away...what's this permanent wall here...another GCV???"

This was in cool old days when artifacts from drops were a rarity (IIRC less than 10 deep uniques had DROP_EXCELLENT -flag), so one GCV was a jackpot, two was unbelievable.

Choosing what to keep and what to toss was real pain. "I can't keep all of these 10 armors, I need to leave space for these 10 weapons too, but then I would need to leave these 10 RoS out...."

This was a very impressive set of randarts generated for this char, in the end I was able to get almost all resists, enough speed, max stats and even two immunities.
