Ascii Dreams slashdotted

Hi,

Just thought I'd mention - my development blog ASCII dreams got Slashdotted yesterday. I submitted a story to the firehose, got picked up and Google analytics logged 16,000 unique visitors over a two day period. [Edit: I guessed 6,000 based on the adsense stats for today - it was actually 16,000].

Having said that, only about 1% bothered looking beyond the article...

Ah well... I was hoping for some Angband recruits.

The story has dropped off of the main page but is still visible on the game category. Original link is http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl.../11/21/1858240 if you want to have a look/spend some mod points.

That's very charitable of you - I would have said less than 1% read more than half the summary... Still, there's no such thing as bad publicity.

Looks like Slashdot is seriously stagnating, it was able to route 16,000 readers five years ago

I suspect digg.com has taken over that space. For instance, the firehose submission system only referred 11 people to my site before it went 'red hot'. The equivalent on digg would be a hundred diggs or so.

I mean, in past six years, the numbers of internet users grew massively, but Slashdot seems to be still read by the same bunch of freaks.

Yeah - realised that as soon as I sent it. That's why I straight away edited my post to sound like I was saying something intelligent instead

Didn't realise you'd be quite so fast in response.

The Games section on Slashdot is arguably one of the weakest - the editor (Zonk) comes under a lot of criticism and the majority of games related stuff gets very little comment. Sites like Eurogamer, Kotaku and Gamasutra do a lot better content aggregation of game related news.
