Sky will become famous soon enough
give me some advice

hmm.. how do i format this to show like it does on the ladder? http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=21605

anyway, a couple questions:

1. what depth should i be with this character?
2. what can i do to improve it?
3. what sort of obstacles am i likely to face?

i've barely found any potions of stats, now that i have broken through the 18 barrier with DEX, i plan to milk it for STR and then WIS with potions of brawn and contemplation. This game is with selling on so i got quite a bit of money for the BM.

No TO at all. I've had to leave behind a couple good levels (8-8 and 7-8) because i couldn't TO the stuff inside. And i have just a tiny bit of speed which is useful for mundane stuff but not quite enough to go toe to toe with bigger mobs, much less uniques.

This is my first semi-successful priest, all the other ones have die at CL10 or lower. I'm mostly relying on Orb for .. well, everything. I'm planning to enchant that crossbow of mine a bit, too.

You put code tags around it (the # above the text box), or you wait for some kind person to do it for you

Estie is on a distinguished road
I would just make my way down steadily, hoping to find ESP before the Phoenix gets you. My current priest found both ESP and first -TO below 90 - very unlucky, but otoh very lucky to have made it that far without either.

Rods or wands of light for safe resting recommended.

I dont normally carry book 4 that early - the useful spells have high failrate with low wisdom.

As for improving, I think you know what you need, it will trickle in steadily from small kills, floor items or minor vaults you manage to loot. I dont know if you have found any yet, but my favourite mid game rings for priests are =mouse which eventually get replaced with poison resist or speed or artifact.

The killing method is orb, not melee, at this stage. Melee comes many dex potions later later when you get multiple blows and dont need the weapon slot for anything important like ESP or /200 wis. Crossbow is great, too.
I have macros F1: targets next monster and casts orb, F2: casts orb on current target. And of course, a bless macro (F9 for me) to activate before shooting bolts.

The greatest risk, if youre doing everything right, are always non-evil awake dangerous monsters like the Phoenix. You have a rod of detection in your home; I would carry that, to use before doing anything involved like cracking open a vault.

the rod of detection is at home because the recharge rate is horrid and i'm using ... oh, i see what you mean. stuff like the phoenix wouldn't show up with Detect Evil ... right.

@sky--
Full detection is a huge deal. If the Phoenix doesn't get you, a drolem will. Or even gravity/plasma hounds. It certainly is important before opening a vault.

got better, found two (now 3) rods of TO, and Priest5, plus i managed to buy Priest6 off of the BM. I'm killing junior uniques, like The Balrog Of Moria, and Eol, but other stuff is out of my league for now.

As it seems now, i'm looking at a max of 300~350 DPS with melee. Can't wait for some boots of speed.

Are you using much melee? If so, switch to the highest damage weapon you have. That main gauche is pretty poor. That other shield looks tasty, though I suppose you can't afford the stat hit yet.
What is your fail rate on the big 2 priest spells (Heal300, TO), both with and without icky wield?

The main gauche is actually the top damage dealer for the moment; you can add at least 5/25 or 1/5 to the displayed number for that +5 speed. With +10 speed boots that would change. That being said, the difference in damage is far too small to justify icky; I´d use the trident.

Edit: - and enchant it along the way.

You're a priest, you can outlast anything. Hell, you can kill Morgoth with Orb; I'd wager it's pretty competitive with your melee damage output especially when you consider you won't need to spend turns healing so often. Just bring plenty of Restore Mana potions and a good stack of Cure Critical Wounds in case you get tagged with stun or confuse or other ailments.
