Gorlim and Kavlax are the first genuinely dangerous monsters in the game. Pretty much every player loses to each at some time or other.
You might want to update your version. 3.1 is really old.

Oops. Never mind. If you want to kill Smaug or Itangast, carry !rHeat (unless you are a mage.) Similarly carry !rCold for big cold breathers. Single resist base element damage tops out at 533/round. It is almost never worth taking this kind of damage because it wastes !heal, and it destroys equipment. As a midgame priest, there is no way you could take smaug without double resist.
