I pictured hybrids as "crazy-looking animal, like a Manticore or Chimera" and not "guy with animal head"... Minotaurs are classed as hybrids, though, even though they're just bullheaded, bullfooted humans... But the Cat Lord is probably not a mix between human and cat, but more like a Kobold, a cat on two legs who mentally resemble a human. Kobolds are not "animals" either.

and a Harpy is a hybrid and is a woman's face on the body of a bird (and is an animal).

I don't really mind either way, it just seems odd that anything defined by the symbol 'f' would not be an animal. but hey, it's only a very minor point.

Do note that Gothmog is also branded with fire, so Slay Animal wouldn't have helped anyway. Slay animal is not that big a deal, so why not make him an animal?

It's an old AD&D-ism. Heck, i think the monster manual it's in might be from regular ol' D&D, before the A got added at all...notice the -9AC...gotta love THAC0

That does imply that the Cat Lord ought to be a 'p'... in which case, the slay_animal wouldn't and shouldn't have any effect.

Obviously for thematic reasons the Cat Lord should be replaced with "Tevildo, Prince of Cats" from the original Tale of Tinuviel. Then there're no legacy D&D or Andrew Lloyd Weber issues. And he is clearly an animal as much as any demonic cat thing can be one.
