[Announce] Poschengband 5.0.5 Released

Yet another release in yet the same place. 5.0.5 this time.

The big change this time is the addition of a new class: The Skillmaster.

The Skillmaster allows you to build and design your own class. I did a lot of work on the user interface and helpfiles, so, rather than repeat myself, I'll let you read about it inside the game. The only thing perhaps worth mentioning is that you use the 'G' command to gain skills. In the UI, the uppercase version of a command usually brings up context sensitive help.

Other changes this release include:
[1] Better handling of repeated messages, especially Clear Mind and Virtue spam.

[2] Burglary Rogues are CL1 casters and use DEX. Non-burglary rogues remain CL5 casters using INT.

[3] Sorcery Identify spell becomes 'Mass Identify' rather early on.

[4] Burglary books were not being stocked in the BM (remove the TOWN flag in k_info.txt to fix this since black_market_crap() now simply disallows objects where this flag is set).

[5] Ammo allocation has been redesigned. Perhaps seeker stuff is too common now? Somebody play an Archer/Ranger and let me know

Bug fixes mentioned on the forum (up to around Dec 1) include:
[1] Gold amounts overflowing and becoming negative (I guess this was a tax to raise some revenue for The Variant Maintainer??)

[2] Draconian Metamorphosis in the middle of berserker melee was raising a divide by 0 error, since changing your body form chucked all your melee weapons in the middle of the attack loop.

Enjoy!

ME WANT! GIMME!!!

(I don't think I've seen anyone else mention it, but I want to thank you for all the work you've done on the documention. It's helpful and even enjoyable to read because of the flavour that's been added.)

I want to also echo this sentiment. Having played only a few variants along with V, the documentation here is such a huge asset to Poschengband, along with soooo many other awesome features!!

Time for me to give this [5.0.5] a spin

Found a bug, probably persistent from prior versions:
You can escape to World Map from certain ambushes, this is probably because the nearby monsters were asleep (and they're not supposed to be asleep during ambushes, right?!)

Skillmaster sounds like it's something right up my alley.

You were just ambushed by some very lazy monsters. "Ambush that guy? Yeah! Sure! Wait... no, naptime."

Also Mitze, how nice of you to join . Is that you or the other mitze (good luck answering this one)?

The only reason I had TheOtherMITZE as an email is because some jerk took the original. Who else had reason to use this random jumble of letters, I'll never know.

Here's a YouTube video of my playthrough with my latest Hasty Tonberry Skillmaster, Heritage XV (from PosChengband 5.0.5, of course) from GAME START to the 2 hour mark:

Enjoy!

Pardon silly question, but what is the 'usual spot' for downloads? I saw the Skillmaster in the changelog and I really NEED to play it!

Post In The Interest Of Informed Decisions

Because I believe in informed decisions when one is planning out character builds, I decided to create a wizard-moded test character and experiment with the skillmaster. Here's what I found (EDIT: You'll need to highlight the text below, because of spoilers):

For melee weapon skills:
  • You get a STR increase at your first, third, sixth, and ninth point.
  • You get a DEX increase at your second and fifth points.
  • You get a INT decrease at your sixth and ninth points.
  • It only takes four points in any weapon melee skill to have master proficiency in that class of weapons. The fifth point gets you an additional quarter of a blow, +10 to-hit, and +7 to-damage.
For the 'Martial Arts' skill:
  • You get a DEX increase at your second and fifth points (cumulative with the normal melee DEX increase).
  • Your first point gives you an AC bonus like a monk and access to the unarmed techniques up through 'Eagle's Claw' (6d6).
  • Your second point increases the AC bonus and gives you access to the 'Circle Kick' (6d8) technique.
  • Your third point further increases the AC bonus and gives you access to the 'Iron Fist' (8d8) technique.
  • Your fourth point gives you mastery proficiency, further increases the AC bonus, and gives you access to the 'Flying Kick' (8d10) and 'Dragon Fist' (10d10) techniques.
  • Your fifth point further increases the AC bonus and gives you access to the 'Crushing Blow' (10d12) technique.
  • Note that the number of blows you get increases with the number of points invested.
To be continued . . .
