Question Saves and Resists questions

Hello all, a returning player diving back into Angband for the first time since mid 2008. I lost my best character ever to a HD crash soon after Theo the Dwarf Cleric found Ringil for the one and only time I've found it in years of playing off an on. Stepped away from the game for a bit then got distracted by meeting a nice gal who is now my wife. SO I'll count that as time well spent even if it wasn't 'banding. ;-) Looks like you all have been BUSY with the coding in those 2.5 years!

1) I know the Basic4+Poison are the resists you need to save vs InstaDeath damage.

2) I know the "high" resists such as nexus mostly don't save you much damage currently but help a lot with the status effects caused by such attacks.

3) Skimming the forum i see mentions that 100% Saving Throw will ALSO help against many of the status effects.

Is there a list anywhere that I have missed on the wiki or the help files on which resists prevent which status effects and which ones a 100% save will handle?

Got a nice load of artifacts cluttering up the house of my current character (minor save scumming against "Stupid Tired Death" due to late night playing while i get the hang of Angband again) and want to figure out which combo to use.

Talking

Now I really want to know!

That last trip down netted me 5 more artifacts and a set of boots of speed. This needs some serious thinking about what to keep, what to wear, and what to dump...

character dump at http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=11162

It is all pretty much ad hoc. The general rule is that you get a save against a spell, but not a melee attack. Except for paralysis. Probably there are other exceptions as well. If they cast confusion at you, you can save, but a melee attack to confuse always gets you if it hits. Breath attacks always hit. Confusion breaths are gone in the nightlies, but a chaos breath will always confuse you unless you have rChaos or pConf.

The nastier effects of nexus can be saved against. Hold life gives you a 90% saving throw (independent of your normal throw) to resist losing experience, and mitigates the loss if your save fails. Otherwise I think Eddie (PowerDiver) got everything.

I don't recall there being a save vs stat-scramble. Which really is the only effect of nexus I care about.

Code:
            if (randint0(100) < p_ptr->state.skills[SKILL_SAVE])
            {
                msg("You resist the effects!");
                break;
            }

            msg("Your body starts to scramble...");

I stand corrected.

Was "pConf" a typo, or was the nomenclature switched around?

rConf is the old high resistance to the damaging confusion attack. pConf is protection from the confusion effect. In the nightlies, there is no longer a damaging confusion attack, and bronze DSM no longer exists, etc.

Blindness and Fear did not have a damaging attack and now the terminology is that you get protection from, rather than resistance to, those effects.

The importance of this change is that these protections are now random abilities on things like blessed weapons, and no longer appear as high resists on things like elvenkind armor. It also means that a cloak of protection is now misnamed.

In general, you have a damaging attack like light and a related protection such as pBlind. If you receive the attack, resistance reduces damages and prevents the side effect. If you do not have resistance, you receive full damage and then check to see whether you have protection from the side effect.

This was discussed some time back in this forum and I don't remember anyone having a problem with it.

I don't have a problem at all with it. I generally remember the discussion, I just wasn't sure if that was what was going on...which is why I phrased the question in the manner I did.
