Welp, I guess I reached the first, which still feels like gimped warrior with more damage output than before but still probably less damage output than warrior at the same point. Theoretically I may be at the second power spike, except for the annoying detail of never actually finding book 2. TL;DR you aren't missing anything.

Having enough mana to cast Poison Brand when needed felt like a decent power spike, too. But I was "lucky" in a way to not be using branded weapons.

I've been using Eowyn and its around 300 vs evil, 400 poison. So a reasonable spike against a bunch of big dragons.

So I am trying this, and got lucky early.
* Forasgil at DL 15 (this is a great weapon, but not ideal for blackguard)
* MHDSM at DL 23
* Aranruth at DL 26. +4 DEX and 3d5 dice makes this a very good weapon, but not as good as ...
* .. Eorlingas at DL 28. This has +2 DEX/STR/speed.

Even with 1.6 blows (as I started with) Eorlingas was doing 150 vs evil. It is now doing 444 damage against most monsters (with Poison brand spell); against evil it does 336. And I still only have 3.8 blows. So it has a ways to go. I've been using Rilia against weak disenchanters to preserve it. Not fighting many strong disenchanters yet.

I also got a Speed ring +8 at DL 44 (from Mim) and speed boots +6 at DL 46. And Arkenstone at DL 61 from Saruman (whom I killed from a distance.) And finally, I got a memorable Elven cloak of the Magi from the black market (with ESP.) One of the best BM purchases I have ever made.

In the spirit of possibly make the Blackguard a little more interesting before one gets to CL30 or so, maybe Throw Monster or Thirst for Blood could be available in the first spellbook at less power and grow with in power with the character, similar to Orb of Draining for a priest?

just noticed I am unable to play in tablet mode at angband.live. The chat room works, but keystrokes aren't getting through to the game for some reason. os=android.
Edit: it is a problem with the keyboard. I can't play in a regular terminal window either: the echo isn't turned off, and keystrokes get held back. plus: no control key.

Too bad angband is no longer present in Google Play.

The ability to use 2x =Open Wounds without (further) penalty is actually pretty strong so impair hp regen is really not an issue.
