Stupid non-death

OK, I decided to play Angband again after a few years. I never managed to beat this thing.

My character was doing pretty well. Level 20 or so. I was amazed at how much I remembered. But then it was gone .. all gone. The game couldn't load my save file.

What happened? I was playing in Ubuntu 10.04, Angband version 3.1.1 installed from the package manager. Then I installed Ubuntu 10.10, the hard way, preserving my /home partition but reformatting the OS partitions.

Now I may have lost my save file if it was stored under /var, I'm not sure. But it also seems that a new Ubuntu gave me a new Angband, version 3.1.2v2, and I see in the release notes that it breaks save files.

So either I lost the save file myself, or the game itself is incompatible anyway. Maybe I should install Angband from source next time, so I don't get upgraded when I'm not ready for it.

AFAIK angband doesn't have any auto-update features (where would it update anyway), so this must be your operating system or whoever operates your system doing.

Yes, when I installed Ubuntu 10.10, and reinstalled Angband from the package manager, it gave me the latest version. The same thing would have happened if I had upgraded Ubuntu in place - it would have automatically upgraded Angband.

It should not have deleted your savefile, merely rendered it unusable. If you look in /home/yourlogin/.angband/Angband, it should be there.

Once you've found it, you can roll angband back to 3.1.1 and finish off your game before upgrading.

I started a new game in 3.1.2 and there's a save file in ~/.angband/Angband/save/. But I couldn't find one from 3.1.1. That's why I suspect it was storing it under /var in that version.

No matter. I'm enjoying the improvements in 3.1.2, so far.

Ah yes, well remembered. In fact it was in /var/games/angband/save I think - and should still be there, unless Ubuntu defaults to purge on upgrade.

Glad you are enjoying the new version.
