sil save files

I noticed that Sil doesn't seem to delete the save files of dead characters. So I start a new char, give it a random name, play it, char dies, then there still is a save file related to this char. If you open it you just get back to char generation, but why does it still keep a file? Seems like a bug to me, although one with no game consequences, just some annoying file management.

Keeping your old saves retains your monster memory. This is especially helpful if you've played a game with lore master to a significant depth, because your new character on that file will have perfect recall of every monster in the game.

IIRC, many angband variants (and V itself) do this (tying monster memory to specific save files).

Yes, the first screen could be clearer - you shouldn't select (b) - new character, apart from the very first time, but rather (c) - open saved character, always with the same name. In this way, options and monster memory are preserved among successive characters.

Maybe "character" should be renamed to "savefile"?

wobbly will become famous soon enough
Is there an option somewhere to turn it off? I also use random names & sometimes forget which is my save game & which are previous character.

Are you sure about the Loremaster effect? What I thought I'd observed was that monster memory acquired through normal means got saved, but not monster memory acquired through Loremaster.

Neato! Learn something new every day. I guess loremaster works by showing you the entire recall text for the monster, but doesn't mess with the state of the monster memory itself.

Just name your savefile something simple, like 'a', and then rename the actual characters you play with it --- you can choose the name at the end of character generation. Savefiles are actual files in the folder (SIL_ROOT)/lib/save, so you can rename your existing one.

If you play this way you will notice some benefits, such as a real high-score list, and the fact that some of the monster abilities are "remembered" along different characters.
