But no a - Ring of Speed (+7) was hiding in the last cranny of the level.

Usually that's because you missed the special item on the previous level

This dwarf paladin finds the Battle Blessings book at 500 feet!
(not yet useful per se - but I can afford the extra weight because of my speed ring

I've gone through whole games without -9 levels. This is insane.
